On May 13, 2K Games announced Mafia: Trilogy. If Mafia II and Mafia III receive minor updates, then the first game in the series will be redesigned from scratch. On the eve of the official presentation of the remake, which will take place on May 19 at 19:00 Moscow time, Cybersport.ru tells how to maintain the original atmosphere of Mafia: The City of Lost Heaven and not to disappoint modern players.

Gorgeous shooting with bad fights

18 years after the release of Mafia: The City of Lost Heaven is hopelessly outdated in many aspects, especially in the technical and visual. Judging by the screenshots, the graphics in the remake will be redesigned from scratch – the developers plan to significantly improve the quality and resolution of textures, as well as lighting and other nuances of the picture.

But what else needs a remake – the processing of the physical model both in fights and in collisions of cars with people. In the original game, it is made too clumsy – the models do not fly away from a blow by a car, but simply shift or fall under the wheels, without affecting the movement of the car. And hand-to-hand fights look ridiculous at all – when striking, one does not feel that the enemy is really taking damage and is standing on his feet with difficulty.

Mafia’s Fields and other NPCs constantly create problems for the player with their primitive AI

I would like the developers to add the NPC self-preservation instinct inherent in every adequate person. Computer allies not only complicate the gameplay – they force the user to act unnaturally and unnecessarily take risks. And if you’re very unlucky, some episode can become completely impassable – even with 100% headshots from the first shots in some situations, the player physically does not have time to shoot the enemies before they send your ally to the other world.

Where are we going?

In 2002, Mafia compares favorably with its main competitor – Grand Theft Auto: Vice City – with more realistic and complex physics of car behavior. In Mafia, the cars did not accelerate to maximum speed in seconds, went into a skid during sharp turns, and the terrain greatly influenced their dynamic characteristics. In the 1930s, only the coolest cars could compare in power with modern small cars, and at the same time they weighed much more. In Mafia: The City of Lost Heaven, this was felt in full – the cars went uphill much worse, after a collision or braking for a long time they gained speed, and rash maneuvers on them invariably led to a turn or skid.

Riding in Mafia: The City of Lost Heaven needed a lot, and from the very beginning of the game

Many believe that a long ride is the most boring part of the first part of Mafia. But to reduce distances is not the best solution, because hardly unhappy with long trips will like it if the developers reduce the size of the world. But in the remake, you can diversify them with dialogs with passengers, and then even moving to a neighboring location will become much more exciting and interesting. At the same time, it will expand the already rich history of the game and reveal more strongly the character and personality of some characters.

The main thing is not to overdo it

Mafia: The City of Lost Heaven is rightly considered one of the main hits of the gaming industry at the beginning of the XXI century. And developers should take this into account by offering the same product, only with the use of modern technologies in the game building. The greatly increased productivity of iron will improve the physical model, and new textures, lighting and graphics will be able to attract younger gamers to Mafia, who in the original version would hardly have lasted more than an hour.

Only the failure of the Mafia III prompts bad thoughts – after two parts of the atmospheric story of the American gangsters of the 1930s-1950s, we got a militant walk-through with monotonous and boring missions. The developers of the trikvel even cut the number of parts: bullet holes and glass shattered on cars, the police did not respond to speeding, and the master keys disappeared from the protagonist’s arsenal – these are one of many other nuances lost.

All this was “seasoned” with a lot of technical problems immediately after the release, which completely discouraged the desire to restart the game after a couple of hours of familiarization with it. It will be sad if this happens again in the case of the remake of Mafia: The City of Lost Heaven. And I really want to believe that the Hangar 13 studio will take into account the negative experience with the third part and a remake of the first Mafia will be made at a qualitatively different level.
