Caernck in Amnesia: The Dark Descent

Amnesia: The Dark Descent left a powerful mark on the entire horror genre: without the creation of Frictional Games, there would be no cult Outlast, for example. And although the game itself is full of interesting decisions and creepy moments, the most terrible thing about it is still Caernk – an invisible creature that lives in the flooded basements of the castle.

The monster is given out by splashes on the water, and the only salvation seems to be to remain on land. As soon as you touch the water surface, the creature immediately begins to chase the player, causing a powerful adrenaline surge. Yes, the monster can be easily distracted with chunks of flesh scattered around the basement. Moreover, Kaernk can even be killed with a well-aimed throw of a barrel or a box, but he is so frightening at a meeting that most players did not even think about trying to do something.

Shibito in Forbidden Siren

Japanese horror again. Silent Hill’s father Keiichiro Toyama became the main inspiration for Fatal Frame. After completing work on the first part, he left Konami and created the lesser known, but no less notable Forbidden Siren series. A complex plot about a Japanese village, a mysterious cult and a few unfortunates who happened to be nearby, liked many gamers and introduced the series to the pantheon of the most creepy games.

Shibito – unusual opponents, whose name can be translated as “corpse people”, played an important role in this. Unlike the usual zombies, they partially retained their memory and act in accordance with it, but at the same time they very persistently pursue their goals. In addition, they are immortal: it is possible to defeat a shibito in battle, but after a while he will rise again and continue pursuit. Another memorable feature of the monsters was the unique animation: photographs of faces were superimposed on the models, creating the effect of an ominous valley. In dynamics, it looks really creepy.

Mimics in Prey

Arkane Studios’ Prey has taken the familiar Prop Hunt to the next level, making gamers jittery at the slightest rustle. It is worth noting that there are two mugs on the table, as a hand instinctively reaches for the trigger of a faithful GIPS gun. The horror of the enemy mimicking the encirclement lies precisely in the constant tension: who knows, maybe the chair in front of you is not a chair at all. The game is especially annoying in the first hours, when normal weapons are absent and you have to fight monsters with the help of engineering devices that are poorly designed for this. But a tub of ficus can kill inadvertently.

Pyramid Head in Silent Hill 2

The Red Pyramid, Executioner, Pyramid Head or Pyramidich at all is probably the most famous monster in the Silent Hill series. He first appeared in the second part and was the personal nightmare of James Sunderland, but was so loved by the players that he found his calling in the pursuit of other characters. The pyramid can be seen in the film adaptation, in the rail shooter Silent Hill: The Arcade as one of the bosses and under the name “Boogeyman” in Silent Hill 5. The monster was recently added to the asymmetric online horror game Dead by Daylight.

The creator of the original design, Masahiro Ito, wanted to come up with a mysterious creature with a hidden face and spent a long time trying to find a suitable design. According to legend, the mysterious pyramid helmet appeared when Ito crossed out one of the unsuccessful concepts with a red marker. The slow but deadly embodiment of James’ inner fears is one of the most memorable and truly creepy monsters in gaming history.

The Rat King in The Last of Us Part II

When Neil Druckmann promised that players would be surprised by the new types of infected, he was not joking. And if stalkers or shakuns do not really stand out from the usual row in the first game, then the last newcomer can seriously scare.

Taking as a basis the idea of the legendary Rat king, Naughty Dog has created a unique monster. It appeared when in one rather compact place there was a group of infected for a long time, because of which they grew together into a single monster – terrible and extremely dangerous. The Rat King is tenacious, slow and inevitable, which reminds the aforementioned Nemesis and Pyramid Head. Fortunately, you can meet such an infected only once in the whole game, and judging by the fact that there are no references to analogs anywhere (and people in the game keep careful documentation of the types of infected), one would like to hope that the king is one of a kind.

Over the decades, games have given the world a lot of monsters that put pressure on the personal fear zones of different gamers. Who do you think is the creepiest monster? Share your opinion in the comments.
