July 17 will release Ghost of Tsushima – an open-world action game from Sucker Punch Productions. This is the second game of the studio for the current generation of consoles, the first was Infamous: Second Son, which was released back in 2014. Fun fact: “Bad reputation” was one of the first PlayStation 4 exclusives, and Ghost of Tsushima, apparently, will be the last – after all, the PS5 release is just around the corner. Liberties in history and the main character
As the historical foundation for the Ghost of Tsushima, Sucker Punch chose the period of the Mongol invasion of Japan in 1274. This is probably the first AAA game with such a setting. During this period, the Mongols attacked Japan in order to build up the power of their empire. In response to a series of letters demanding surrender without a fight, Japan executed several messengers, which angered the Mongol Khan Khubilai and made war inevitable.
The equipped Mongolian fleet set sail and was the first to attack a small island – Tsushima. The surprise factor worked perfectly: the Mongols destroyed almost the entire population of the island. They were about to move on, but did not calculate the required amount of resources and were left without provisions. An abnormal disease was superimposed on top, affecting almost all warriors. Kublai decided not to retreat and led an exhausted army to Kyushu – one of the remote islands.
At this time, the Japanese managed to establish a defense and prepared for the attack of the Mongols. Thanks to competent positioning and a bit of luck, they managed – the Mongols could not enter the island, and suddenly a storm started flooding almost all of their ships, forcing them to flee. Later, after several years, the Mongols decided to re-attack, but even then the attack failed – just before the assault, a powerful typhoon began, which smashed their entire army. Later he will be called “Kamikaze.”
In Ghost of Tsushima, the action takes place on Tsushima, but you should not expect full historical authenticity. The authors immediately said that this is a free work, based on a real historical setting. In reality, the Mongols spent only a few days on Tsushima, and in the game they settled there so densely that they built their own forts and organized road patrols. It was a small provincial island, which in those years could not boast of either bamboo forests, fortresses, or large cities, but Sucker Punch added all these elements to the game contrary to historical facts.
The developers should not be reproached, if only because they honestly admitted their intentions to write their own story. However, there is no doubt in the seriousness of their preparation – in an interview, the creators of the game said that they enjoyed the advice of Japanese historians and experts in martial arts. The team also visited Tsushima and spent several weeks there to collect a sufficient number of references.
The main character of Ghost of Tsushima will be a samurai named Jin Sakai, who wants to take revenge on the Mongols for the brutal attack on Tsushima. He is not a simple peasant, but a student of Shimura – the island’s leader. According to the plot trailer, while improving his skills, Jin began to master the techniques of stealth killing and other tricks that the ninja practices. The mentor did not approve of such methods, so in the end the young samurai decided to act independently. The Mongol leader Khotun Khan will also be in the game, whose image partially coincides with Khubilai.
Open World Markers and the Importance of Research
The developers have repeatedly claimed that Ghost of Tsushima is their most ambitious project. Among other things, this confirms the size of the game card. The action will have a huge open world available for exploration. At the same time, the authors promise numerous biomes – from bamboo forests to snow-capped mountains and plains, as well as a dynamic change of day and night. Explore the open world of Jin will be on a personal horse, which the player can choose at the very beginning of the story campaign.
To prevent such a large map from appearing empty, the authors filled it with numerous activities and question marks that are familiar to all fans of the third Witcher. You can draw parallels not only with the CD Projekt RED game, but also with the Assassin’s Creed franchise. In the gameplay trailer, you can see that Jin can perform several additional tasks in the field to increase rewards.
The game will have both traditional markers on the interface and the map, as well as some very creative solutions. For example, the action will not have the usual guide that leads the player to the mark. The wind will replace him: Jin will be able at any moment to cause a bright stream of air, which will direct him in the right direction.
The authors tried to highlight all the key places with the help of visual tools. For example, if you see smoke from a fire over a certain location or even a whole fire, this will mean that a side quest awaits you there. While moving around the world, a bird can fly over Jin’s head – it will show the way to a hidden location, and foxes can lead the hero to a hidden sanctuary, worship of which will help in pumping and create a point of rapid movement.
In an interview, Ghost of Tsushima game director Nate Fox said that Jin will receive new abilities and weapons throughout the story. However, to find rare items and upgrades, you need to explore the island and carefully study the environment. Tsushima, according to Fox, has many secrets.
The combat system and two development paths
Since childhood, Jin studied the art of samurai combat, but his skills were not enough to repel the Mongols in the attack on Tsushima. Therefore, the protagonist decided to study the secret ninja techniques. The authors specified that, in search of new knowledge, Jin will have to give up many samurai principles. Thus, the main character will have two branches of development – for open battle (samurai) and for stealth (ghost).
The developers noted that the game style will not be tied to pumping – it only gives additional bonuses and skills. Even a Jin fully rocked in stealth will be able to accept an honest sword fight. However, Jin Samurai is likely to have more armor and health.
The combat system, according to the authors, will not be easy. The main character can kill the enemy in just one stroke of the sword, but this will work in the opposite direction. A battle with four or five enemies can turn into a real test, even for an experienced warrior.
What can Jin do, swaying along the path of a samurai? When approaching an enemy camp, the hero will be able to summon opponents to an open battle, and then enter the settlement, clearing his sword from their blood. The Mongols can be attacked with a short bow, and with return shots – beat off arrows with a katana. In battle, a change in the grip of the sword and stance will be available. According to the authors, this will help against different types of enemies.
Jin, who has chosen the path of a ghost, will attack enemies stealthily. The sentry can be distracted with a special clapperboard, and then killed in cold blood. When moving, a scale appears on the interface showing how much Jin is visible to opponents. With this leveling, the main character will also have a bow, but more powerful and long-range. One of the ghost’s skills will allow the hero to covertly eliminate several opponents in a series of clever movements – the same mechanics called Fear Takedown was in Batman: Arkham Knight. Finally, if Jin kills most of the opponents in the camp, the rest will simply run away in fear – it is not for nothing that the hero bears the title of ghost.
Various devices will be available to Jin. To move around the open world, a cat hook is useful, and in battle it will be possible to throw bombs and kunai. The main weapon of the hero will be a family katana, which can be improved. You can also pick up axes and spears, however, in “peaceful mode” they will not be displayed on the Dzin model – otherwise it would resemble a walking arsenal, not a clever warrior.
Customization and resources
Ghost of Tsushima will have many types of armor and headgear, as well as amulets. All of them affect the characteristics of Jin – for example, one of the amulets slowly restores the hero’s health outside the battle. Armor can be repainted using colors. The collection process was made as unobtrusive as possible: bamboo or reed can be picked at full speed without getting off the horse.
The authors specified that the game will have an economic model. In the open world there will be several large settlements with merchants. They can take quests or buy the necessary items. According to the developers, for completing their tasks you can get particularly valuable rewards.
