The Sid Meier’s Civilization series is the standard of turn-based global strategies of the 4X subgenre about the development of empires. After 30 years and more than ten titles released, including both classic works and unexpected spin-offs, game designers have perfected all the mechanics of the game almost to perfection. Fans of the genre are building cities, building wonders of the world, learning technology and fighting with their neighbors – each part of Civilization reveals these activities to the fullest. But what to do if the usual development from the ancient world to the ideal future is suddenly bored? Time to experiment beyond your favorite name! Catch a selection of games similar to Civilization.

Old World – “Tsiva” about “Game of Thrones”

Galactic Civilizations III by Stardock is Civilization in space. If you were worried about what happens to humanity when you do achieve a scientific victory, this is a worthy answer. Much more worthy than Civilization: Beyond Earth, which was also about this.

The events of Galactic Civilizations III take place in the XXIII century during the galactic war of the earthlings and the henchmen of the Dreadlords – the drengins and yors. Our task is to prevent our enemies from winning. The player starts from scratch to conquer the planets of the Universe and rebuild the space fleet – in general, to go the same way from the ancient world to a developed state, but in a new way.

Automatic battles in Galactic Civilizations III will appeal to those who don’t bother with the army too much. Your task is only to make the space fleet strong – and the stronger the better. In Civilization, it is important to correctly take a position: with the proper skill, and crossbowmen can unleash a unit a couple of epochs older. In Galactic Civilizations III, there will be no such freebie.

It’s nice to conquer Earth, but space is a completely different scale. Neighborhood is not too important here, and the main strategy is the infinite growth, beloved by many. The planets are different: some are too small and suitable for production purposes or mining, others – large, with a large number of building slots, can become scientific centers. Gotta catch em ‘all!

Egypt: Old Kingdom is a strategic simulator that you will start during the construction of the Great Pyramids. Your sense of self-importance will be satisfied in this game from the start, since you are not some average nomadic settler, but a pharaoh. To lead the people of Egypt from the moment of its appearance to the founding of the first empire is the main task of the player.

The main advantage of this game is that you will study the history of Egypt. While creating it, the developers consulted with the best Egyptologists. Of course, no one knows exactly how the Great Pyramids were built, and you can be a supporter of the theory of aliens … However, this version can also be implemented in the game.

In Egypt: Old Kingdom, you will have to face the need to gain the approval of the gods, slave riots, lack of resources in the middle of the desert and other “usual” problems of the pharaohs. As a result, Memphis under your leadership should be transformed. In my opinion, the game is 10/10, if you like the theme.

Agree, “fantasy general” sounds proudly. This title first appeared in 1996 as one of the many popular hexagonal strategies at the time. A few years ago, Owned by Gravity remembered her, shook off the dust and launched a sequel, which was released in 2019.

Fantasy General II takes place three hundred years after the events of the original. You are still a general who must recruit an army and rally all the creatures that live in the world called Caledonia against a common enemy. The army will turn out to be very motley: golems, barbarians, lizardmen, harpies and even undead will gladly come out with you against the Empire.

The release of Humankind has not yet taken place, and therefore nothing concrete can be said about it. Judging by demos and reviews from experienced strategists like Alexey Khaletsky, the game will be a worthy rival to Civilization VI. It will be released on April 22, 2023.

Humankind makes Amplitude Studios – she owns the Endless series, one of which I included in this list. Civilization VI has already gotten pretty boring in four years, even despite the successful Gathering Storm in 2019 and the cycle of minor DLCs in 2023. The timing for releasing something new is perfect.

Humankind’s graphics will resemble a mix of Civilization 5 and 6. Many mechanics will be identical, while others will borrow from Endless. Fans of turn-based global 4X strategy games will definitely play it if the release succeeds from a technical point of view. Isn’t it too daring to release a new game that so closely resembles the existing ones? Let’s leave the question unanswered and wait for the release.
