How to connect mario with sub zero

How to connect mario with sub zero

Have you ever wondered who is stronger – Pikachu or Bayonetta, who was the grandfather of Dumgaya and will Ezio Auditore cope with the dragon hunt? If so, then you will definitely enjoy video game crossovers. This industry tradition is sometimes absurd, sometimes tortured, but interesting to the audience. We will talk about how developers shuffle universes in this article.

We are a family

Because of copyright overlays, most often we see the intersection of characters in the same series, franchise, or publisher’s legal field. The most famous example, which launched the fashion for casual video game crossovers, is Super Smash Bros., in which Mario, Pikachu, Link, Samus and others came face to face.

The genius of the idea of this game is difficult to overestimate. First, Super Smash Bros. allowed with minimal effort to fill the niche of fighting games that is empty for Nintendo – characters, their stories and features have long been spelled out. Secondly, cult heroes, by their presence alone, attracted players to the title, facilitating promotion. Thirdly, fighting game introduced users to the main Nintendo line.

Today at Super Smash Bros. Ultimate characters can be found in dozens of different publishers

The success of Super Smash Bros. spawned several sequels and a couple of similar games from competitors. Sony, for example, released almost the same, but much less popular, PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale fighting game, which has little to do with modern “royal battles.” In it, you could fight Nathan Drake against Sackboy or Kratos against the Princess of the Glutton.

SEGA was not limited to fighting games alone. Under the names SEGA All-Stars and SEGA Superstars there was a collection of mini-games, a tennis simulator and a racing arcade. In these games, characters of other copyright holders even met. In particular, in Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed there were heroes from Team Fortress 2 and Ralph from the cartoon of the same name.

Clash of worlds

Speaking of cartoons: one of the most ambitious and legendary video game crossovers owes its existence to them. The Kingdom Hearts series from Square Enix managed not only to interweave all kinds of Disney products, but also to connect it with Final Fantasy.

According to the plot of the series, the main character travels between worlds, some of which correspond to Disney films, while others are invented specifically for the game – in them you can meet characters from different parts of Final Fantasy. The developers did not want to mix everything too much, so the heroes try to keep secret the existence of other worlds for ordinary inhabitants. Because of this, say, Iris from FFVII cannot drink tea with Rapunzel, but she met with Goofy and Donald Duck.

If we talk exclusively about gaming crossovers, then the first to come to mind is Street Fighter X Tekken. This game did the almost impossible – combined the two most titled fighting games. At the same time, the initial idea of the developers was even more ambitious.

Street Fighter X Tekken was developed by Capcom, so, strictly speaking, it was the usual Street Fighter, for which Tekken fighters were adapted. It may seem to those unfamiliar with fighting games that these two Japanese games are almost identical. In fact, their differences are so noticeable that not one of them has succeeded in ousting a competitor from the market in more than 20 years of struggle.

Crossover made fighting game fans understand what Tekken means with Capcom’s hands. There was only one question left – how would Bandai Namco implement Street Fighter. The answer to it was to be given by Tekken X Street Fighter, but, unfortunately, its development was frozen. What exactly caused this, we did not find out.

Sometimes virtual crossovers receive franchises that have never entered this field. It recalls RoboCop versus The Terminator, as well as the asymmetrical horror Dead by Daylight. A significant part of the characters of the latter are the heroes of various horror films, and therefore in this game Freddy Krueger can hunt for Ash Williams, and Laurie Strode can hide from the Goofice.

The above listed titles, despite all the differences, are united by one detail – they are based on crossovers. One way or another, they are tied to a clash of characters from different universes, this is their killer feature that attracts buyers. However, this does not mean that crossovers cannot be in other games.

Crossovers often happen in fighting games, where, with the help of add-ons, characters from other franchises are introduced. Traditionally, fighters who have nothing to do with the Mortal Kombat tournament appear in Mortal Kombat. In the tenth part, it was possible to organize the classic confrontation between the Predator and the Alien or Jason Voorhees and the Leather face. Tekken 7 has the Walking Dead Nigan, and Soulcalibur VI has Geralt of Rivia.

Sometimes developers add some kind of connection with other games as a reward, for example, for pre-order. And manufacturers can push studios to create some kind of exclusive content related to a particular platform. In Mortal Kombat (2011), Kratos was a playable character for the PlayStation 3, and in Soulcalibur II, a similar situation was with Link on the GameCube.

With the spread of the service model in games, temporary events began to appear, which sometimes are crossovers. The Ghost Recon series was visited at different times by Sam Fisher, Terminator and Predator. As for Monster Hunter: World, it’s easier to say with whom she did not have collaborations. The game hosted thematic events based on Resident Evil 2, Horizon Zero Dawn, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, Assassin’s Creed and other titles.

Recently, a trend has been increasingly noticeable when something that has gained popularity begins to seep into all possible areas. This is clearly demonstrated by Fortnite. Marvel characters appeared in the Battle Royale for the premiere of “Avengers: Final”, and the ninth episode of Star Wars brought heroes from a distant, distant galaxy into the game. The same thing happened with the releases of Borderlands 3 and Very Strange Things, as well as with the Super Bowl.

It has never been

In addition to the directly held crossovers, it is worth noting those that never came out. The developers themselves hinted at some of them, they simply joked about some, and the third ones were generally fan theories.

How do you like the idea that the two main Naughty Dog franchises – Uncharted and The Last of Us – are in the same universe? They meet the same companies, comics, cicad tokens. Too tight, yes, and on the timeline they do not converge.

With Assassin’s Creed and Watch Dogs, things are a little more believable. It all started with rumors and the simple convenience of the concept. Then, in the first Watch Dogs, a certain “Brotherhood” asked to kill the head of Abstergo Entertainment, Olivier Garno. A man with the same name, with the same position, in the same company appeared in Black Flag. A little in Origins they found a photo of the murder of the very Olivier Garno with someone suspiciously reminiscent of the main character of Watch Dogs.

There are other examples. John Romero and Tom Hall – the founders of id Software – have confirmed one old fan theory. According to her, the events of Wolfenstein, Commander Keen and Doom not only occur in the same universe: BJ Blaskowitz, Billy Blaze and Dumgai are relatives. BJ is Blaise’s grandfather, who, in turn, is Dumgai’s grandfather or great-grandfather.

Of course, there are Easter eggs, which remained just jokes in which no one laid excessive meaning. For example, the dead “assassin” in a haystack from The Witcher 2. Other references, most likely, will remain only hints – the mention of Kane and Lynch in the newspaper in Hitman: Blood Money and the appearance of someone very similar to them in Absolution.

Want to finally hear a theory that unites not a couple of tiles, but generally each of them? It is voiced by the plot of the animated series ReBoot – all games, programs, individual files and even numbers live in one dimension, and go to screens like work. Too young to remember the very first cartoon entirely drawn on a computer? The same concept is partially repeated in Ralph. In it, too, you could see Sonic, Chun Li or Bowser, relaxing in a bar or rushing about their business after a shift in an arcade machine.

If you start laying down chains of interconnections, as in the theory of six handshakes, you can connect almost all games and not only each other. There is even a whole sitethat tracks all intersections of fictional characters. Administrators, for example, claim that there is a proven link between Half-Life and Sailor Moon. And what franchises would you like to face in a video game? Write in the comments.
