Many fondly recall the simple times when players weren’t chasing graphics and enjoyed the gameplay. In Russia in the 1990s, Sega and Dandy, two consoles from different generations with truly addictive games, ruled the ball. And, of course, platformer dominated on both – a genre that outlived the strongest and does not lose popularity today. Cybersport.ru decided to recall ten platformers that occupy a special place in the library of the “gray elephant”.

The platform is based on the Disney animated series “Duck Tales”. You will play for Scrooge McDuck – one of the richest drakes in the world, who nevertheless continues to look for ways to get rich. To do this, he travels around the world in search of lost treasures.
The main feature of the gameplay is Scrooge’s multifunctional cane: with its help he can fight, attract various objects and jump high. The varied levels (from snow-capped mountains to the lunar surface), comfortable and responsive controls and challenging but fair gameplay make the game one of the best Capcom has released on the NES.
Ninja Gaiden is a really important game: it was one of the first to introduce cut-scenes not in the form of static pictures with text. The plot of the first game in the series tells the story of Ryu Hayabusa – a ninja who goes to America to avenge his father’s death.
Armed with a trusty katana and special gadgets like shurikens and boomerangs, Ryu must blast his way through many levels on his way to the main villain. It’s not easy to do: Ninja Gaiden is considered a hardcore game that does not forgive mistakes. The difficulty is not only the abundance of opponents, but also platforming: the jumps themselves may not be so easy, and together with the constantly appearing enemies, they are completely capable of turning a gamer’s life into hell. Fortunately, Ninja Gaiden at least offers an endless supply of revivals: after losing the standard three lives, the player can restart the location without starting from the very beginning.
A classic that needs no introduction. The first part of the series, still alive today, is a direct sequel to the arcade Mario Bros. The player takes control of the Italian plumber Mario, who is sent to rescue Princess Peach from the clutches of the treacherous King Kupa. In Super Mario Bros. the basic formula of the gameplay has finally taken shape: the player goes through several levels, meeting the boss in the final, and then goes to conquer a new “world” in the same way. In the arsenal of Mario there are jumping, running, the ability to “crush” opponents and various bonuses like a flower that allows you to throw fireballs, or a star, which gives temporary invulnerability to attacks.
Super Mario Bros. It is considered one of the greatest games of all time for a reason: attractive and stylish visuals look interesting even today, and there is little that can be compared with the sharpness of control even after so many years.
Popo and Nana, the Eskimo children, faced a disaster: the condor stole their vegetables, taking them to the top of the mountain. Not wanting to put up with this, they decided to arm themselves with wooden mallets and go for honestly obtained food.
The plot is here, of course, for show. Much more interesting gameplay: Unlike most games of its time, Ice Climber offers vertical gameplay instead of horizontal, forcing players to constantly climb up through 32 levels. Mallets are needed mainly for breaking ice blocks that impede climbing. Numerous enemies can not only harm the Eskimos on their own, but also block the previously pierced passage with the help of new ice: incorrect timing of the jump can easily take life.
The absolute king of the collection and one of the best platformers in the history of the genre. It was based on a formula familiar from Super Mario Bros., but its refinement led to something completely new. This time the player is free to explore a large map of the world for one of the Mario brothers – Mario or Luigi. The goal this time is different: Princess Peach sends the brothers to save the seven kingdoms from the evil Kupaling, who stole the magic wands from the rulers. As if that weren’t enough, they also turned kings into animals. However, it will not do without kidnapping the princess.
The devil, as always, is in the details: the same bosses in the original were replaced by seven Kupalingov – Bowser’s children, each of which has its own characteristics. In addition to the fire flower, various other bonuses have appeared, such as a leaf or tanuki and frog costumes. In addition to costumes, new techniques were added to the game, for example, the ability to slide down hills, throw special objects or crawl over vines – before that the action was automatic. In addition, all the kingdoms this time differ visually: sand dunes and green grass replaced similar locations.
