The legendary quest of the golden era of the genre invites you to get into the shoes of Guybrush Threepwood, a young adventurer whose dream is to become a pirate. In an attempt to gain fame and honor from the sea wolves, he will have to go through three “great tests”, find the love of his life, learn that a word is often sharper than a sword, and defeat the terrifying ghost pirate LeChak.
The Secret of Monkey Island is considered one of the best quests of all time for a reason. Perfected humor, interesting gameplay and characters, in which it is impossible not to fall in love, instantly raised the game to the pantheon of the best. Continuations were not long in coming: just a year later, a sequel was released, in no way inferior to the original, and today the series has already five games. The first two, by the way, were reissued with updated graphics, a modified soundtrack and added voice acting, which, of course, did not exist in the early 1990s.
When the trees were big, the grass was greener, and the Russian games were cooler, the alliance of Akella and 1C gave the world Corsairs – one of the best pirate games that has ever seen the light of day. The protagonist of the story is Nicholas Sharp, a former captain of a merchant ship that was captured by the Spaniards. So Sharpe became a slave, but this did not last long: having gathered a small team of the same losers, he hijacked a ship and went to create his own story.
A spacious (for its time) open world, the interaction of three parties (not counting, in fact, pirates), more than four dozen ships and real freedom – all these are “Corsairs”. And even more: naval battles force you to calculate the battle several steps ahead, for a successful boarding you need to pump the skills of the hero and build up the team, and for a comfortable life you will have to trade, given the difference in prices on different islands of the archipelago. The game was so successful that its sequel was bought by Disney and renamed “Pirates of the Caribbean”.
And again the sequel, which jumps to the pirate theme. In the first part, an unnamed hero managed to save one island from the Fire Titan, but the world was left in danger. To somehow cope with the kraken, which haunts the seafarers, he will have to infiltrate the pirate camp and find ancient weapons that can kill both sea monsters and titans.
The romance of piracy has replaced the typical near-Middle Ages of the original game: sailing ships sail the seas, swords have been replaced by swords, and the usual magic is replaced by voodoo spells. Otherwise, this is a typical Piranha Bytes game, which has not changed the formula for success since the first Gothic: several factions, to enter into which you need to complete a lot of quests, indirect pumping through training and an initially unfair balance, leading to constant deaths at first. If you have already become a citizen of Khorinis, then you will feel at home in Risen 2 – except that pirates and a kraken come to replace the orcs and the magic dome.
Network “session” for 54 (!) People about sea battles. Several maps, three different modes and an incredible sea of fun. Players unite in teams of up to 13 people and share responsibilities among themselves – from the captain to the loading gun.
The game gives incomparable emotions, and fans are ready to tell epic stories about their sea voyages for hours. It has never been more fun to bail water out of a broken vessel with a bucket.
It’s a strange thing: the still popular film franchise, even if it is going through hard days, has not really acquired decent games. Of course, there are domestic “Corsairs 2” already mentioned in the list, but the rest of the titles either turned out to be a failure, or were completely canceled. But I would like to experience the adventures of Captain Jack Sparrow myself, without watching the films! In this case, you will have to turn to plastic people for help.
In the LEGO version, you can relive the plot of the first four films, recreated with the trademark humor of the series. Key events on the spot: from the scene in which Elizabeth first noticed the Black Pearl, to the destruction of the fountain of youth. It’s also the latest LEGO game to feature no voice acting. A big plus: key scenes in a weird pantomime look even funnier.
