The RPG genre has not lost popularity since its inception: gamers are still ready to embark on new journeys as heroes and save the world for the hundredth time. Games last decade everyone knows, but the classics are slowly beginning to be forgotten. Cybersport.ru decided to correct this oversight and offers a look at ten cult titles that every fan of the genre should play.

Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura
The first role-playing game of the famous BioWare immediately showed other developers how to make an RPG. Former doctors (and the studio was founded by doctors) did not skimp on detailing and completely transferred the tabletop role-playing system AD&D 2 into the virtual world, elegantly stitching mechanics into the game. Thus, they saved the players from complicated calculations and the need to study a large layer of rules, leaving all the key features, up to the specifics of the interaction of characters with different worldviews.
Already the first part was distinguished by an excellent plot, interesting characters and a well-developed world. The latter was largely due to the desktop past: the Forgotten Realms universe, which appeared in 1985, was taken as a basis. It is worth noting the scale of the development of the title: the developers did not skimp and created a huge world, the full study of which will take up to one and a half hundred hours, and various ways of solving quests will easily push you to replay it – it is simply unrealistic to see all the content at once.
Diablo
In 1997, humanity first looked into a post-nuclear retrofuturistic future. Former America has been scorched by nuclear attacks from China, which the country fought for oil. The user takes on the role of a native of Vault 13, who has to find a water chip to save people from lack of water. Like the player, the hero knows practically nothing about the world on the surface, which, despite not particularly suitable for life, continues to exist.
The first Fallout set the stage for one of the key role-playing franchises. Most modern players know and love the later parts, be it New Vegas or even Fallout 4, but the first part is also worthy of attention if you get used to the outdated graphics. The parameters of the hero really affect the course of the game, the plot flexibly adjusts to the actions of gamers, and the open world with a lot of cleverly scattered stories prompts you to independently explore this unfriendly universe, not relying too much on the central quest – all the most interesting is often outside of it.
Gothic
The engine is from Baldur’s Gate, and the developers are the fathers of Fallout. Of course, Icewind Dale couldn’t help but make it to the list of the most important old RPGs. The plot, however, has almost nothing to do with Baldur’s Gate, and the events unfold in a completely different region of the Forgotten Realms world – Icewind Valley, which is in the name.
The player will have to control a group of heroes who are initially hired as guards for the caravan on the way to the mysterious city of Kuldahar. In an ambush, almost the entire caravan dies, but the team sets out on a further journey, where they learn that a mysterious evil force threatens the Icewind Valley: locals disappear in Kuldahar, the weather behaves in a strange way, and monsters are attacking more and more often. Of course, it is the brave adventurers who will have to deal with the supernatural misfortune. However, unlike Baldur’s Gate, here more emphasis is placed on battles, and not on research – which, incidentally, allows us to call the title not just a clone of the “big brother”.
The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind
Once again BioWare is sent to the world of Forgotten Realms – now, however, completely three-dimensional. The player must find a cure for the plague that decimates the inhabitants of Neverwinter, for which he has to catch four creatures, the ingredients of which will help make an antidote. True, this is only the beginning of the hero’s misadventures, and after the creation of the antidote, a long quest begins, during which he again has to save the world from inevitable death.
The plot may not boggle the imagination, but Neverwinter can surprise with something else – a built-in editor that allows you to create your own stories. Of course, over the years after the release, hundreds of them have accumulated, and among them you can easily find small masterpieces, and the developers themselves managed to release many new modules for the original game. And the more flexible version 3 of Dungeons & Dragons rules allows you to create truly engaging stories with the right effort.
Planescape: Torment
The seventh part of an adventure in magical Britain, created by Richard Garriott. As in the previous parts, the player takes control of the Avatar, who is once again sent to save the kingdom. For some unknown reason, all the magicians have gone mad, and a strange creature calling itself the Guardian declares its intentions to take control of the kingdom, threatening to give Britain a “new era of prosperity.” In fact, the Guardian is the main source of the kingdom’s troubles, and, of course, it is Avatar who will have to stop him.
It is probably impossible to overestimate the importance of Ultima. Today, only the most dedicated fans of the genre remember about it, but it was the “seven” who managed to create many of the techniques still in use today, such as mouse control and detailed companions. And it is also a real “sandbox” in which it is simply interesting to be: Garriott set his most important goal to create a believable and living world that you just want to study. The story then easily fades into the background, giving way to exploring the environment, solving riddles and completing many side quests that are really well written. For a game nearly 30 years old, Ultima VII has survived surprisingly well.
