Many people love to watch cartoons, and many also love to play. Can these two hobbies be combined? It turned out to be quite difficult to compile a list of PC games based on cartoons, but not impossible. Inside me, two opposite personalities peacefully coexist – a fan of South Park and a fan of Disney princesses, so a selection of games based on cartoons came out accordingly. Dedicated to all kind crazy gamers!

Shrek 2: The Game – Call Papic
Not only children watch cartoons. In the 2000s, Disney Studios and DreamWorks in particular began to make cartoons that were even more interesting for adults than for young viewers. Without having accumulated enough knowledge, it is quite easy to miss half of the references in “Shrek” or the same “Madagascar”.
Unfortunately, now the fashion for filming cartoons that speak in an understandable language with a parent is gradually fading away. However, you can remember and review the entire Shrek series, and then for some reason install the old Shrek 2: The Game, you can even now … The game can even be bought legally – in the markets. You will need a floppy drive and a great desire to spend time in such an unusual way.
Arcade Shrek 2: The Game is made on the Unreal Engine 2. In 2023, this game will not be able to surprise the gamer with graphics or plot. It is suitable for those who passed it at the age of 10-12 on their first PC, and subsequently did not touch singles, preferring online entertainment. The main task of the hero is to go through simple levels, destroying enemies, collecting coins and collecting various items. The final boss is the fairy godmother.
Our community strongly associates Shrek 2: The Game with streamer Papich. The audience’s requests to play it grew into a fix idea. The number of pastes about this has exceeded the absolute maximum, one more – and the universe will collapse. Papic once again prevented the beginning of the apocalypse and still played Shrek 2 on the stream. The broadcast took place on February 5, 2023, the broadcast has already accumulated almost half a million views. Please do not copy this information!
“Anastasia” – a puzzle about the last of the Romanov family
One of my favorite childhood cartoons is Anastasia. First, the story about Russia filmed in the West, and also based on real events (naturally, rethought in a fantasy format), is powerful in itself. Secondly, as a child, in comparison with other stories about princesses, “Anastasia” was a horror – a cartoon, to be honest, creepy. The game too.
In 1997, a quest for Anastasia was released on the PC. The player’s task in it is mainly to go through puzzles and find items on the screen. At one time, the gameplay was criticized due to poor management and a lack of tips for the gamer: it was sometimes very difficult to guess what exactly needs to be done to continue the campaign. By the way, the player in this title controls Nastasya’s dog, not Romanova herself.
I recommend watching the cartoon “Anastasia” to everyone who has not yet read the feed or has forgotten its content. The history of the last royal dynasty, or rather the consequences of its extermination, is disclosed in accessible language, albeit with some distortions to please the genre. In reality, everything was much less romantic – Anastasia Romanova was shot with her family in the Ipatiev house, and the woman who told the story of the miraculous resurrection, Anna Anderson, was not officially recognized as a real princess.
South Park: The Stick of Truth – Playable Cannot Be Deleted
The scripture of toxic people and fans of black humor aka cartoon “South Park” in 2014 received the first full-scale game in the setting. I believe that this is one of the best examples of the quality transfer of the idea and spirit of the cartoon into the virtual world. It’s even a bit of a pity that children shouldn’t be shown this masterpiece. In many ways, the atmosphere was influenced by the fact that the creators worked on the title original the animated series Matt Stone and Trey Parker.
In 2017, a sequel, or rather just a new part of the adventures of schoolchildren from South Park, was released – South Park: The Fractured But Whole. In comparison with, I’m not afraid of this word, the brilliant first part about the confrontation between “people” and “elves”, the second is less vivid, but it’s still worth going through. I strongly discourage those who are not familiar with South Park and have not realized the disclaimer that sounds at the beginning of each episode of the cartoon.
The gameplay of both South Parks “trolls” everyone and everything. At the beginning of The Stick of Truth, we practice casting a powerful spell – fart. I think further explanations are meaningless. I can only say that the combat system is turn-based, there are elements of collectibles and random events in the spirit of classic JRPGs. However, you won’t have to think about any Final Fantasy in the process – South Park blocks any borrowings.
The Simpsons games – this was already in The Simpsons
It is believed that the animated series about Homer Simpson and his family is a prophetic work of art, predicting some of the upcoming events in the world with amazing accuracy. It is unlikely that the artists of The Simpsons study esotericism, but the authors really noticed some points quite subtly. In the geek community, The Simpsons is one of the pillars of all adult animation. And the phrase “It was already in The Simpsons” can be heard … in South Park.
There were a lot of video games based on The Simpsons, and with regular consistency, new platformers, runners, puzzles and other undemanding titles appear based on the series. One of the central games for this franchise is The Simpsons Game – never released on PC, but it represents the best version of all other titles.
The Simpsons Game is split into 16 episodes. Each of them is trying to parody some existing game or bright event in the entertainment industry. For example, it’s not hard to guess what the title of Grand Theft Scratchy refers to – a game that the female part of the Simpson family – Marge, Lisa, and Maggie – seeks to ban.
The classic PC game based on The Simpsons is The Simpsons Hit & Run, unfairly forgotten by me. It also “rode” on GTA – this is an excellent parody of Grand Theft Auto III, which was released two years earlier than the subject.
Toy Story 3: The Video Game – Video Toy Stories
Toy Story 3: The Video Game was released in 2010. Studio Avalanche Software made a platformer in a popular setting at that time, but, contrary to the expectations of the publisher Disney Interactive Studios, the game was quickly forgotten, although it stayed in the UK top for three weeks after its release.
Toy Story fans may love Toy Story 3: The Video Game, although 11 years after its release, the graphics leave a lot to be desired. But the title is still available on Steam, unlike many other cult games based on cartoons. Toy Story 3: The Video Game’s story-driven campaign follows the escape of toys and their worst nightmare – becoming unnecessary after the owner grows up.
“Three heroes” – Slavic tragicomedy
The list of computer games based on cartoons would be incomplete without a representative of one of the most famous series of Russian animation. Color!
Many will remember the cartoons “Alyosha Popovich and Tugarin the Serpent” (2004), “Dobrynya Nikitich and the Serpent Gorynych” (2006), “Ilya Muromets and the Nightingale the Robber” (2007), as well as “Three Heroes and the Shamakhan Queen” (2010). I think many will agree with me that the first four cartoons about three heroes were interesting. Later tapes, for my taste, turned out to be worse – the textbook stories ended, the authors began to invent a bicycle and eventually “milked” the franchise. PC games were released on the first four full-length films.
I watched the first cartoons of the series about heroes in one breath. It is impossible not to notice that much in them is borrowed from Western paintings, but seasoned with Slavic mythology and jokes that are understandable only to the Russian-speaking population. Games based on “Three Bogatyrs” turned out to match the humorous cartoon. They are full of irony, and the original simple plot is framed by even simpler gameplay in the spirit of classic quests.
SpongeBob SquarePants – high quality modern platformer
SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom – Rehydrated was released in June 2023. This is a remake of the 2003 game about SpongeBob, in which familiar characters and plot have been preserved, episodes cut from the original have been added and the graphics have been completely updated. The authors of the remake not only did not spoil the old platformer, but, in my opinion, surpassed the original.
SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom follows Sheldon Plankton’s attempt to steal a crabsburger recipe by creating an army of robots. At the same time, SpongeBob and Patrick make a wish for the “magic shell” – to create robots for them to play with. When Plankton’s army attacks Bikini Bottom, the yellow sponge decides that this happened because of his “magic”, and tries with all his might to correct the misunderstanding.
Perhaps SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom is the highest quality game based on the animated series to date. SpongeBob fans are in luck. By the way, in a month and a half from the release was sold over a million copies of this title.
Rush: A DisneyPixar Adventure – Not Best, But Pixar
Rush: A DisneyPixar Adventure is another platformer based on cartoons. In Rush: A DisneyPixar Adventure, the player goes to six Pixar cartoons at once – Up, Toy Story, The Incredibles, Cars, Ratatouille and Finding Dory – the latter appeared in the 2017 reissue, and the first version of the title was released in 2012.
The game has no plot, the developers are betting on the visual component. The gamer finds himself in the Pixar amusement park and can walk on various attractions-locations. In each of them, several mini-games are waiting for him, during the passage of which you can earn coins and collect bonus items. Adults are unlikely to like endless mini-games for the sake of accumulating coins, but children love to “stick” into a monotonous gameplay – the title is designed for them.
Disney’s Aladdin is the best of old
Children of the nineties, many of whom have crossed the threshold of their thirties, fondly remember old platformers and arcades. Disney’s Aladdin is one of the classic representatives of the cartoon games list. Disney’s Aladdin has ten full levels (and two bonus levels). Although many remember that it was not easy to complete the game, some young gamers did not know that in the end they will have to defeat Jafar and get Jasmine’s hand.
It is impossible not to note the similarity of “Aladdin” with “Prince of Persia” – the reasons, in general, in the original source. The game itself is replayable, and now only outdated graphics can interfere with your teleportation process in 1993.
Kingdom Hearts is another catapult into the Disney universe
Kingdom Hearts is a Disney multiverse game, the first part of which was released in 2002 and the last one in January 2019. In it, along the course of the plot and completing various quests, you will meet with a variety of characters from the mouse house. For a long time, the journey of a character named Sora was only available to console users, but in 2023 it was announcedthat the PC boyars will also be able to touch the beautiful from March 30.
I think that the Kingdom Hearts setting may appeal not only to fans of Walt Disney cartoons, but also to those who are not too versed in “princess varieties”. The game is quite high quality and, unlike many on this list, is really suitable for children. The gameplay is simple, genre – the whole series is Action / RPG – addicting. Any part is suitable for a family passage.
Watching a cartoon or a series of cartoons is boring several times: the dialogues are memorized almost by heart, the actions of the characters and plot twists are no longer surprising, and with each new viewing you notice less and less details that were missed earlier. Computer games based on your favorite setting help expand the cartoon universe and look at the history of the characters in a new way.
While writing this article, I noticed that interesting cartoon games for PC were made mainly in the last decade or even earlier. At the time of the most intense confrontation between Disney and DreamWorks, all ways of fighting for the audience were good. Video games based on cartoons were often “hooks” for maintaining audience interest – game studios bought rights or negotiated within companies to produce a product that helped grow and share an audience.
Such mutually beneficial cooperation exists to this day. Every major cartoon release gets its own game. Why weren’t they included in my selection? The secret is simple: all cartoon games are now released for mobile devices. It’s cheaper and more popular – most kids have smartphones, and AAA titles run the show on PCs, which are too expensive to create.
