2020 was the most unusual year in the history of the professional Dota 2 scene. The only full-fledged Major took place in January, The International was canceled, and an endless number of online leagues appeared. Valve delayed the announcement of the new DPC season with all its might, delayed the patch over and over again, and one by one the players complained about the lack of motivation. However, all this did not stop the teams from making their fans happy with a high-quality and spectacular Dota.

As in 2019, our editorial team made up two symbolic teams – a roster of foreign players and a roster from the CIS. We’ve highlighted the players who contributed the most to their teams’ success during the season. Do you agree with our choice? Suggest your options in the comments!
CIS national team
Kerry – Alik V-Tune Sparrow
In 2023, V-Tune finally emerged from the up-and-coming lineup to become the main carry of a stable roster. Sparrow joined FlyToMoon at the end of 2019 as a standin, and in February next year, together with Victor GeneRaL Nigrini became a full-fledged participant in the roster. It was with the arrival of V-Tune that the team began to actively conquer the tier-2 scene and even impose competition on the grandees: in March, FTM won Parimatch Dota 2 League Season 2by winning the final Virtus.pro from No.[o]ne and Solo as a member, and earned $ 50 thousand.
For the next six months, the V-Tune team actively participated in various online leagues, regularly resisting the world tops. In September, the roster won OMEGA League Dota 2: Europe Divine Division, which attracted the attention of eminent organizations. Two weeks after the triumph, FlyToMoon players signed trial contracts with Natus Vincere… Under the new tag, the roster’s results have become even better – top 2 ESL One Germany 2023 – Online, 5-6 place on EPIC League Season 2 Division 1 and the triumph at OGA Dota PIT Season 4. The club’s management was satisfied with the roster’s performances, and at the end of the year NAVI confirmed that full-fledged contracts were signed with V-Tune and the team.
Midlane – Danil gpK ~ Skutin
For most of 2023, fans could watch a transfer saga titled “Where will gpK ~ go?” For most of the season, player rights belonged to Gambit Esports, who obviously did not want to part with one of the main stars of the new generation. Skutin was sent to the reserve several times, and at some point it seemed that these uncertainties could play a cruel joke with gpK ~. During the year, the mid-player acted as a standin Team Spirit, HellRaisers and Evil Geniuses, from time to time demonstrating a high level of play, but then admitted that he was on the verge of leaving the discipline.
The situation was resolved by November, when Virtus.pro announced a new roster, which included gpK ~. All the players on this roster have repeatedly stated that they really wanted to play with each other, and finally their dream came true. The first tournament for the new roster of gpK ~ was the second season of the EPIC League, in the grand final of which the team defeated two-time champions of The International – OG… Many experts have already called the guys “the new generation of legendary players from the CIS”, and we are looking forward to the next TI to see Skutin on a really big stage.
Offlane – Dmitry DM Dorokhin
Over the past few years, the exemplary offlaneer in the CIS has always been Pavel 9pasha Khvastunov, and few could have imagined that someone would be able to throw him off the throne. However, as it turned out, the players of the new Virtus.pro roster are capable of anything.
In April 2023, VP announced the signing of the second Dota 2 roster – VP.Prodigy, which includes little-known young players. But the lack of extensive experience on the professional stage did not prevent them from starting to show the amazing Dota already at the first tournament. One of the main creators of the success of the “young” Virtus.pro was DM.
In a little over five months under the VP.P tag, Dorokhin, together with the team, took part in five grand finals, losing only two of them, and even those unstoppable at that time Team Secret… Prodigy’s most iconic win was the decider Epic Prime League Season 1, where DM and the company confidently defeated the main team of VP with a score of 3: 0.
In November, Virtus.pro announced that Dorokhin’s roster would become the main one, and the players quickly thanked the organization for their trust – first place at EPIC League Season 2 after defeating OG in the final.
“Four” – Vitaly Save-Melnik
The Cybersport.ru editors chose the support Virtus.pro Save- as the best “four” of the outgoing year. In 2019, the Moldovan joined VP with Solo and No.[o]one, but the team failed to achieve high-profile victories. In February 2023, the organization transferred the player to the reserve, and two months later Save- became the captain of the VP.Prodigy roster.
In the new lineup, Melnik revealed himself as a strong leader capable of leading the team. The results spoke for themselves: victories on Gaming World, GGBET StayHome Challenge and Epic Prime League Season 1, as well as second place in WePlay! Pushka League Season 1 Division 1… Throughout all the tournaments in the new lineup, Save- has repeatedly demonstrated in-game flexibility, at OGA Dota PIT S3 the Moldovan even lost the fourth position lil me alone, but this did not stop the roster from reaching the grand final of the competition. Virtus.pro could not help but notice the successes of the young team, and in November Melnik’s roster got rid of the Prodigy registration and became the main roster of the club.
“Five” – Artem Fng Barshak
The only player who managed to retain a place in the symbolic CIS team since last year is Fng. In 2019, Barshak surprised the entire Dota 2 community by collecting rosters in Gambit Esports twice a season, which successfully passed to the majors. Fng faced the harsh realities of the transfer market again this year when its roster fell apart once again. GpK turned out to be too much in demand ~.
Barshak abandoned attempts to assemble a team under his own leadership and went to conquer Europe with Alliance… From May to September, Fng played for the Swedish organization on loan, and when his agreement with Gambit Esports expired, he signed a full-fledged contract with the new team.
Barshak’s new team is progressing slowly but surely. The roster was able to end the year on a good note – a victory in the second division of the EPIC League. It will be interesting to see if Alliance can return to the top with Fng next year.
World team
Kerry – Mike miCKe Nguyen
One of the main discoveries of 2023, of course, was the Swedish squad Team Liquid… After a disastrous performance at The International 2019where Ayden iNSaNiA Sarkoi made a mistake with the pick of Gyrocopter in the bo1 series for elimination, the team did not break up and continued to perform in the same composition. As the past year has shown, the decision was absolutely correct.
Throughout 2023, Team Liquid performed quite stably at times and was marked 5-6 in DreamLeague Leipzig Major, the second lines at OGA Dota PIT S1 and DOTA Summit 13 and by the end of the year was able to gain a foothold among the leaders of the European division. The main victory of the roster can be definitely called the triumph at ESL One Germany 2023 Online, where the team confidently passed the lower bracket and defeated Natus Vincere in the final. At the end of the championship, the organizers recognized iNSaNiA as the best player of the tournament, but the team captain was so impressed with the performance of his carry that he wanted to transfer this title, and with it the certificate for a brand new Mercedes, into the hands of miCKe. The modest Swede did not accept the gift, citing the fact that he did not drive a car.
Midlane – Michal Nisha Jankowski
In 2023, the Polish esportsman changed his role, but did not lose his place in the symbolic world team according to Cybersport.ru. Over the past 12 months, Nisha has once again convinced the fans that he doesn’t care which lane and which hero he needs to play – he will be the best on the server anyway.
2020 began for Team Secret with an everyday victory at a Major DreamLeague Leipzig Major – there the Jankowski team lost only five maps in the entire championship. But then the online era began, which, rather, should have been called the “Team Secret era”. From May to September, Nisha played with the team in seven online tournaments. How many of them did Team Secret win? Seven. How many maps did Team Secret lose in the grand finals of these tournaments? Zero. It is a pity that there was no The International in 2023 – it would be very interesting to see Jankowski’s team in this form at the main tournament of the year.
Offlane – Ludwig zai Wahlberg
It seems that we have already told you about the team that won seven tournaments in a row in 2023 and did not give up a single map in the grand finals? Over the past year, zai played for this team on the offline. Wahlberg has been playing for Team Secret for a long time and has not left the tier-1 stage of Dota for a long time. However, this year, the Swede seems to have gained peak form and literally destroyed opponents.
Throughout the year, zai got into various symbolic national teams of tournaments, and the analyst Ben Noxville Steenuizen put him on the second line in the ranking of the most skillful players. True, by the end of the year, Wahlberg complained about a lack of motivation, but he can be understood – it is difficult to continue to actively train when opponents actually cannot resist. Let’s look forward to the early return of LAN tournaments to take another look at the motivated and hungry zai.
“Four” – Tommy Taiga Le
“God Himself moved into Taiga” – this is how Le’s game against Virtus.pro at the Major was described by Team Liquid captain Ayden iNSaNiA Sarkoi. Apparently, otherworldly forces did not leave the Norwegian throughout 2023, which was consistently indicated by the level of his game. Towards the end of the year, Taiga decided that he was too bored with the “four”, and went to smash the new VP roster to the mid with his signature Earth Spirit, after which many European teams began to adopt the strategy.
Thanks to Le’s virtuoso performance, Team Liquid managed to reach peak shape by the end of the year and win ESL One Germany Online 2023. We hope that DPC Taiga will not slow down in the new season and will continue to delight fans with beautiful highlights and new ideas. Maybe next year, like Nisha, he will change his role in the symbolic world team?
“Five” – Clement Puppey Ivanov
As in the previous year, the Team Secret captain remained the best support for the fifth position. In 2023, Puppey celebrated his 30th birthday, but with his acting he proved that age is not the main indicator of successful performances. For many years, haters have been waiting for the legendary Estonian captain to be blown away and his career will go downhill, and each time the esportsman destroys the hopes of ill-wishers.
Seven tournaments in a row, not a single lost map in the grand finals. It is worth noting that in the new season, Team Secret once again made a substitution, but this did not prevent Puppey from rebuilding the team’s game in such a way that it did not notice competitors on its way. If Team Secret does not slow down next year and all players solve their motivation problems, then Puppey will have every chance to lift Aegis over his head for the second time in his career.
