Five Dota 2 LAN tournaments were held in 2023

Before the exacerbation of the coronavirus pandemic, several offline Dota 2 tournaments were held in the world. It sounds, of course, sad, but it is worth noting that they all turned out to be bright, as if they were a match. In Bukovel passed WePlay! Bukovel Minor 2023, which was remembered by the audience for the atmosphere of a New Year’s fairy tale. After him, Germany hosted the only Major in 2023 – DreamLeague Season 13. At that time, no one knew that a tournament of this magnitude would be the last in 2023. Nevertheless, the matches turned out to be very entertaining, and Evil Geniuses with RAMZES666 in their roster, they finally got rid of the curse of third places in major tournaments and finished in second position. Kiev hosted WePlay! Dota 2 Tug of War: Mad Moon and StarLadder ImbaTV Dota 2 Minor Season 3, and in Los Angeles – Dota Summit 12… After that, it was time for online tournaments: almost every day we watched the battles of Team Secret and other tier-1 teams, which caused the audience to lose interest in the competitive scene. We can only believe that the number of offline Dota 2 tournaments will still increase in the new year.

Valve has become harder to fight the Smurfs

In February, the developers released an update that improved the smurf account detection system and made it more “sensitive”. Valve has blocked more than 40 thousand accounts for abusing matchmaking, and after a while other fans began to receive bans to play at a different rating. Immediately after the patch, reddit was filled with complaints: some players swore that their only accounts in Dota 2 got bans, others tried to trick the developers, saying that they had been banned by mistake. Valve’s attempt to expel Smurfs from Dota 2, of course, did not completely solve the problem, but at least a start has been made.

New arcana and personas have appeared

What do Dota 2 players expect every year as much as Diretide? The new Battle Pass, of course. In 2023, despite the cancellation of TI, Valve delighted fans with a pass with three arcana and two personas at once. Battle Pass holders could get a personality for Pudge – a plush butcher, as well as a person for Anti-Mage – his student named Wei.

Most of all, fans of the game were delighted with the lasso on Wraith King, which is made in the old image of WK – Skeleton King. Valve thought through every detail and even left a reference in the quest to unlock the second item style. To complete it, you need to kill a hundred unique heroes in winning games – defeated characters will appear on a special map. Terrorblade on this very map suddenly appeared on a hill – just like EG carry Arthur Arteezy Babayev got stuck in official matches many times.

The second arcana was on Queen of Pain – Eminence of Ristul. Players highly appreciated the new outfit for the hero, but found fault with the second style of the item due to its similarity with the standard Vengeful Spirit skin.

Dota 2 fans have been waiting the longest for the release of Arcana on Windranger. The developers made it very colorful and generously provided with unique effects, although they received a portion of criticism for the “League of Legends style”.

Guilds added to Dota 2

In 2023, Valve introduced a guild system that helps players find like-minded people. At first, communities could only be created by owners of the Battle Pass 2023, and after its end, such an opportunity was provided to Dota Plus subscribers. Anyone can join the guild; Along with other members, the player can complete challenges, improve the position of the community on the weekly leaderboard and receive seasonal rewards – something similar fans have asked developers for many years.

New record for The International prize pool

Despite the cancellation of The International in 2023, Valve has released a new Battle Pass. Through the sale of the Battle Pass, bundles and levels for it, fans raised a huge amount for the tournament prize pool and once again broke the world record. If in 2019 $ 34.33 million was raffled off at TI, then in 2023 more than $ 40 million was raised.And this is only 25% of all sales – the rest was received by Valve. It is not yet clear whether there will be The International in 2023, how $ 40 million will be distributed and whether a new battle pass will be released for the tournament, which Dota 2 fans will definitely be waiting for. One thing is certain: Dota 2 lives, sets records, and it looks like $ 40 million is not the limit.

Nature has cleared so much that Diretide is back in Dota 2

The first Diretide for Halloween took place in 2012 – with it not only a fun mode appeared in the game, but also the opportunity to get a lot of skins for free. So, it is not surprising that the fans liked such an event. However, the following year, Diretide was never announced – and fans began to rebel: they put low marks on Dota 2 on Metacritic, wrote messages to Valve on reddit and forums, spam the phrase “༼ つ ◕_◕ ༽ つ Volvo Give DIRETIDE” in the chat at all tournaments. And in the end it worked – in 2014 the event returned … and then everything went round again.

The players believed that they managed to find a common language with Valve and now Diretide will become a good tradition in Dota. However, since then, “Rise of Darkness” was no longer in the game … until 2023. Almost seven years later, Valve returned the beloved event to Dota 2, although even the most dedicated fans had almost no hope for such a turn of events. Joy knew no bounds, and therefore everyone forgot for a while about bugs and flaws in the game and went to battle with the great Roshan. Moreover, the developers even prepared a cool cinematic with a little history, which is rarely done. The video told about a monster that every year came out of the forest, but then suddenly disappeared without a trace. Dota 2 characters did not even wait for its appearance, but in the end the monster returned … In the end – joy, dancing, confetti. This is a nice reference to Diretide’s seven years away.
