More than a month after the start of the DPC, we can safely say that a certain meta at the tournament has settled down, albeit with some amendments for a specific region. Viewers are already used to the constant appearances of Puck, Batrider, and Wraith King. What about heroes that a lot of casual players don’t really like? Boosters on Broodmother and Meepo or Miners who have watched TraVoMaN videos are not very fond of matchmaking, but official fights with these heroes always turn out to be spectacular and hot. But have these characters found their place in the current DPC meta, and is anyone using them? The answer is in the material Cybersport.ru.

Techies are out of luck with the meta
The most unloved character in the community has been an infrequent guest on the professional scene before. In the current season, he almost completely disappeared from the radar, and this is not surprising. Techies had bad luck with the meta, or rather with those characters that have become popular now. The hero is very afraid of summons, and they are now present in almost every match thanks to the popularity of Lycan, Nature’s Prophet, Beastmaster and Enigma. The same goes for the meta carries Wraith King and Phantom Lancer, which Techies has little to do with. Miner now has one of the lowest matchmaking win rates at the highest level of any hero at 42%. At the same time, against the conditional Wraith King, Outworld Destroyer or Nature’s Prophet, he generally wins only in one meeting out of four.
On the professional scene, accordingly, things are even worse: Techies’ direct counterpicks are now present in every draft of any team, so it’s not surprising that in more than a month in the DPC a hero was chosen only once. The team dared to take such a bold step 496 Gaming from Southeast Asia in a match against T1… On Techies, the “five” of the band played with the nickname Bombi suitable for the character. The opposing team had a mid-lane Underlord with a fast Heart of Tarrasque and two characters with summons at once, which prevented Miner from realizing himself – Enchantress and Enigma. At the same time, Techies, who only collected Aghanim’s Scepter by the 30th minute, was still able to slightly “improve” rivals – he blew up enemy cores three times, and made a total of eight kills. However, this did not affect the result in any way: 496 Gaming lost the map and never used Minera in their drafts again.
The second time, Huskar confronted the meta Void Spirit and also left him no chance on the lane. The Army Geniuses midleader preferred a more offensive build than the Lilgun carry: he did not take Heart of Tarrasque, but he collected Assault Cuirass and Butterfly. However, Army Geniuses lost in this match, and Huskar showed his weakness in the late game, in which he no longer had enough damage to kill the farmed enemy Morphling. However, Asian teams have proven that if it is necessary to crush an opponent and impose a high pace on them, then Huskar is still a great choice.
Situational Broodmother
Broodmother appeared in DPC matches more often than Techies or Huskar. The hero was taken in four regions at once – the CIS, Southeast Asia, North and South America. The character is quite comfortable in the current meta. Broodmother is actively and successfully used in matchmaking at high MMR: in the last eight days she was chosen 364 times, and the hero’s winrate was 53.8%. It is also played by professional players such as Raven, V-Tune and qojqva. However, within the DPC, most teams still shy away from it.
In the CIS and South America, attempts to play through Broodmother ended in complete failure. If Team empire this hero at least defended the line well and only then got lost in the game, then Latam defenders from the first division of South Africa, things went badly since the confrontation in the mid and ended for Broodmother with 0/6/4 statistics.
Broodmother made a draft appearance in North America simply TOOBASED and S A D B O Y S… In the first case, she became one of the heroes of an almost one-hour match, and in the second, they decided to send her to the hard lane, remembering the drawings DkPhobos from 2015. The experiment was unsuccessful, and the character ended the game without a single kill.
The Lilgun team, already familiar to us, played through Broodmother in SEA. The team took the hero three times and was able to win two times. Many, perhaps, are accustomed to the fact that Broodmother opens exclusively at the last peak. Lilgun has a different perspective on drafts: the roster took the character in the first stage, absolutely not afraid of counter picks. Neither Bristleback nor Kunkka were able to kick Broodmother out of the lane, and the latter lost to mid altogether. As for the builds, here the players acted differently, but they always started with Diffusal Blade and Black King Bar.
Oblivion for Meepo
Meepo is going through hard times. It now ranks last in popularity in high-level matchmaking and has one of the lowest win rates at 43.2%. This was partly due to the popularity of Earthshaker, which burst into second place in terms of the number of picks in high-MMR publics.
On the professional stage, Meepo was practically forgotten. And if, for example, Broodmother was also taken infrequently, but at least feared and therefore occasionally sent to the ban, then Meepo was simply not interesting to anyone. The hero did not appear in drafts of three regions: in South America he was twice banned, and in the CIS and Southeast Asia he was picked several times. It is curious that the hero was not used in Europe, although there are enough excellent performers on this character.
Meepo’s only visit to the CIS was unsuccessful – it was taken by NoTechies for Ergon. The character exactly defended the line, but further in the game he could not find himself and became useless. In Southeast Asia, Meepo is doing much better. You’ve probably already noticed a trend that it is in this region that unusual characters, unpopular in the rest of the world, do well. Meepo was once picked by Galaxy Racer Esports and the Army Geniuses team, familiar to us from matches with Huskar. In both fights, the hero won. Both mid laners were able to enter the fast Ethereal Blade, which was ready by the 11th minute, after which they began to actively move around the map with this artifact, leaving no chance for their opponents. Thanks to the kills, within 6-7 minutes Meepo collected the Eye of Skadi and became an irresistible force for rivals.
Southeast Asia turned out to be a remarkable region in general. They ignore several characters that are popular in the rest of the world at once, but at the same time effectively use heroes that everyone has forgotten about. For example, the leader of the region Fnatic successfully plays through carry Io – five wins in five matches. However, we will talk about this next time.
