Dota 2 has many references to pop culture, famous people, myths and real history. Some messages from the developers are simple and clear, they closely connect the world of the game and reality, but others may not be found by all gamers. However, if you start looking for references in Dota, you have a chance to learn a lot of new things. We have prepared ten interesting Easter eggs for you, which are not so easy to solve.

Bane – Valve definitely read Shakespeare

Valve has added a huge amount of literary and musical references to the characters’ lines. Characters pronounce them when they just walk around the map, when they meet each other, die or kill rivals. Not all phrases carry a hidden meaning – it often happens that a cocky hero simply taunts the enemy, but in some cases, the said remarks may seem vaguely familiar to you. For example, by simply moving along the line, Bane sometimes says “Sleep no more!”

The replica “Sleep no more!” (“No need to sleep anymore!”) Is a quote from the ghost of Banquo, a character in William Shakespeare’s play Macbeth. If you have not read the tragedy, then briefly the relationship between Banquo and Macbeth can be described as follows: at first they were allies, later the first was killed by the second because of a thirst for power, which is why the ghost of the murdered man began to appear everywhere. The phrase “Sleep no more!” – this is the verbal embodiment of the paranoia of the dishonest soul, tormented by nightmares of the hero. To understand in more detail the tragedy “Macbeth” you can only read it, this is a very fascinating work.

An alternative way to feel the horror of the phrase “Sleep no more!” the theatrical performance of the same name can serve. There is only one problem – the show is in New York. Bane’s spooky appearance is nothing compared to the mystery in the spirit of theatrical installation. To all Bane fans, I can recommend making a visit to “Sleep no more!” in New York as one of our long-term plans.

Lina is a rock and roll fan

If you often play on Lina, you will certainly hear her say two phrases: “It’s better to burn out than to fade away” and “Helter swelter!”. Fans of rock music will easily unravel Valve’s message: the fiery beauty, it turns out, is listening to rock!

The quote “It’s better to burn out than to fade away”, which translated means “Better to burn out than slowly fade away”, is mistakenly attributed to Kurt Cobain – it was her singer who wrote in his suicide note. However, the original belonged to another rock musician – Neil Young. His song Hey Hey, My My (Into the Black) was included on the Rust Never Sleeps album, and it was there that the iconic line was first heard.

The phrase “Helter swelter!” considered a reference to the equally iconic rock band The Beatles. The Beatles have a song called Helter Skelter – the title can be translated as “Crap.” Lina says “Helter swelter”, which translates as “Heat”, but the meaning is very close to the original. Considering that the second interpretation is much more suitable for the fiery diva, everything falls into place.

Kunkka – sailors have their own score with the wind

Kunkka says: “Sweetly sweetly blew the breeze, on me alone it blew” when Windranger is killed. In literary translation, it means the following: “Gently, tenderly the wind blew, it blew me only one.” An incredibly poetic death, isn’t it?

The original quote is from the English poet Samuel Coleridge. This is a line from the poem “The Tale of the Old Sailor”, written in 1797-1799. We study Pushkin at school, and in English-speaking countries this work is also held. It is considered the classic representative of English romanticism: the language of the work is filled with complex turns, allegories and archaic literary devices. The author even had to simplify the text in order to be published in magazines.

The plot of “The Legend of the Old Sailor” is based on a familiar story – a poem about the Flying Dutchman. The ghost ship Kunkka and his encounter with the wind incarnate Windranger are truly allegorical.

Ax – Red Army soldier

Among Ax’s lines, this one stands out: “Better red than dead!” (“Better to be red than dead”). A player ignorant of history will decide that this is just a reminder of the character’s skin color – he’s red! However, perhaps the whole thing is in the communist predilections of the fighter.

The opposite phrase was used in English-language propaganda during the Cold War. At that time, many US residents were aggressively opposed to Soviet policy, so the phrase “Better to be dead than red” was used as a reminder of which side of this conflict should be taken by exemplary citizens. Dota 2 is not a game about historicity, but nevertheless, some moments of the past years are reflected in it.

The very construction of choosing either side, if a different choice means death, is much older than the Cold War. There have been many events in the world when people had to choose between their convictions and death. There are phrases like “Better red than dead!” In various languages, and Ax can be understood, because few people want to face death face to face, spend buyback, teleport somewhere …

Winter Wyvern – the certainty of being

However, some Dota 2 heroes still remind Ax of fatum. For example, Winter Wyvern refers to one of Benjamin Franklin’s most famous phrases – “In this world, only death and taxes are inevitable.”

However, in the interpretation of the dragon, death can still be avoided, and taxes do not matter, but not everyone will be able to resist the magic of ice and the powerful ax Ax. When meeting with an ally, Winter Wyvern casually notes: “Only ice and axes are inevitable in this world.”

Mars – musical war

Many people know that Mars is not only the planet of the solar system, but also one of the ancient Roman gods, the patron saint of war. The formidable appearance of the hero and the unusual music that sounds during the ultimate can plunge enemies into horror … but classical music fans will only smile when they hear one of the parts of the symphonic suite by Gustav T. Holst. The formidable Mars will not be able to scare heroes armed with knowledge.

Mars’ music is part of the “Planets” symphonic suite. As conceived by Holst, each piece of the work belongs to a certain planet and reflects its “character”. Music for red Mars, which is named after the god of war, mentally sends us to the arena for a bloody duel. It all fits!

Mirana and her tiger scientist

A former priestess who became a princess by the will of copyright, Mirana appears everywhere with her faithful tiger. If you love Dota 2 lore, then you probably know that the pet’s name is Sagan. However, the name hides more than one might think at first glance: it is a reference to the scientist Carl Sagan. It turns out that Mirana has a learned cat. Large and striped.

Carl Sagan is an American astrophysicist of Jewish origin. It will be difficult to describe all his achievements at once: he studied the theory of evolution, wrote science fiction novels, tried to answer questions such as “Is there life on Mars?” and “Why don’t aliens contact us?” However, more than anything, he loved to study the stars.

It was the starlight that led him to science. In his memoirs, it was said that at the age of five he became interested in astronomy and for a long time was in shock to learn that the stars can be much larger than the Sun. Mirana from Dota 2 is also not indifferent to the stars: “Riding on a huge beast from the genus of noble cats, she serves with pride and courage in harmony with the lunar phases and the movement of the great constellations.”

Zeus – Divine Forgiveness

First of all, Zeus is a hero who descended into Dota 2 from ancient Greek mythology. However, his quotes contain much more interesting references. For example, in the revival, Zeus clearly hints that he read the English classic Alexander Pope.

Zeus from Dota 2

Zeus says: “Man is wrong – God is reborn.” Alexander Pope, the second most quoted English writer after William Shakespeare himself, wrote: “To be wrong is human, to forgive is divine.” By the way, Pope was also the first to translate the Iliad into English with iambic pentameters – perhaps the supreme god of Olympus got to know him through talks about this ancient Greek work.

Lifestealer – “my darling”

There is hardly a doter who does not know about the references in the phrases and behavior of Lifestealer to Gollum from The Lord of the Rings, because Valve did not try to hide them. The whole story of this hero seems to have been copied from Smeagol. Two entities live in Lifestealer’s head, he moves in the manner of Gollum and says about himself “we”, not “me”. Where is your beauty, Lifestealer?

Another opaque hint of resemblance to Gollum Valve gives us in special cues. When Lifestealer kills Tidehunter, he can declare “I love raw fish.” Gollum also found cooked fish tasteless, preferring freshly caught prey.

Omniknight – looking into the abyss

Most likely, you have heard the quote many times: “If you peer into the abyss for a long time, the abyss will peer into you.” This is not a fashionable phrase from the boys’ publics on VKontakte, but a saying of the philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche. Usually it is presented in this form, but initially Nietzsche supplemented it: “He who fights with monsters should beware lest he himself become a monster.”

Omniknight slightly changed Nietzsche’s dictum. In Dota 2, the hero’s quote reads as follows: “I have gazed into the omniscience, and it has gazed into me.” Omniscience is translated from English as “omniscience”. That is, the hero has already looked at it, and it looked back? Considering that the prototype of the character is Arthas … Perhaps he knows everything in the world. And Cybersport.ru readers now know a little more about Dota 2 referrals.
