How PSVR works on PlayStation 5 – an overview of how the helmet works with the new console

Insofar as Playstation 5 is a few days from release, many should probably be interested in how the PlayStation VR works on the new console. Portal Road to VR published a material in which he shared his experience of testing a helmet in a bundle of PS5

Connecting PSVR to PS5

The process is no different from PS4, but with one exception: you must have a PS4 camera adapter, without which you cannot connect it to a new console and use PSVR. A new HD camera will also be on sale with the PlayStation 5, but it is not compatible with the current version of the helmet. Sony offers an old camera adapter for free via the official PlayStation website.

Supported controllers

PlayStation VR on PS5 supports DualShock 4, PS Move and Aim Controller, but does not work with DualSense.

Setting up

Once you’ve connected your PSVR to your PS5 and turned it on, you’ll be greeted with the familiar setup screen to help new users get their headset properly positioned and positioned within the camera’s field of view. The first time you connect your PS Move or Aim Controller, you will be prompted to hold it in front of the camera to calibrate the tracking area.

Installing games

Installing PSVR games on the PlayStation 5 is generally pretty straightforward. After logging into the console with your PlayStation Network account, you can find all previously digitally purchased games in your library and choose which ones to install.

The Library shows you which PS4 games you’ve purchased are supported on your PS5. If the project is incompatible, it is marked with a crossed out round icon. For the Road to VR editor, out of 34 PSVR games, only two were incompatible: Robinson: The Journey and Golem.

Helmet features on the new console

PSVR does not offer any additional features on PS5 other than those available on PlayStation 4, including software IPD (eye-to-eye distance) setting, measuring your IPD with a camera, navigating the PlayStation 5 dashboard, and launching non-VR games in cinema, as well as video and screen capture when playing in VR.

Improvements in games – are there any

PSVR games play and look almost the same on PS5 as on PlayStation 4 Pro. For review, the site tested a number of projects released during the PSVR lifecycle on the new console, including those using DualShock, Move and Aim Controller, and did not find any gameplay problems in them, nor could it notice any obvious graphical improvements. compared to PS4 Pro.

However, there is one expected but valuable improvement. A fast PS5 solid state drive that only the lazy hasn’t talked about in recent months has a huge impact on the amount of time you’ll spend staring at loading screens in your helmet. Download speeds vary by game, but here are some examples from our test:

  • Iron Man VR (New game start): PS4 Pro – 0:42, PS5 – 0:21 (2 times difference)
  • Iron Man VR (Download before first cinematic): PS4 Pro – 0:56, PS5 – 0:22 (2.5 times difference)
  • Farpoint (Loading Arrival Level): PS4 Pro – 0:35, PS5 – 0:18 (1.9 times difference)
  • Farpoint (Download before intro): PS4 Pro – 0:13, PS5 – 0:06 (a difference of 2.2 times)

Blood & Truth has improved download speeds, but otherwise the game looks and works identically on PS5 to PS4 Pro.

The increased memory speed also proved to be beneficial for games that suffered from loading textures, and it is possible that the extra PS5 power could clear up freeze incidents, but Road to VR found no examples of this as PSVR games tend to perform quite well. with frame rate.

Record videos and screenshots

Just like on PS4, you can take videos and screenshots from PSVR on PS5 using the Share button on whatever controller you use. Unfortunately, even on PlayStation 5, they are saved at the same low resolution: 1280 × 720 for video and 960 × 720 for screenshots.
