The adventure game officially premiered at the end of last month Psychonauts 2 (our review). She was warmly received both by the press and by the general audience. However, now the studio Double Fine Productions no plans to create a direct sequel – the developers are going to do something else…
Tim Schafer, head of the Double Fine team, spoke personally about the future of the Psychonauts franchise in a conversation with The Gamer.
“You have already passed [Psychonauts 2] one hundred percent? Then you don’t even need to ask for the third part. It took us five whole years to produce the sequel, and you ran it so quickly.
But now we really have no plans to continue. [Psychonauts]… We do not make hard and fast rules [относительно будущих разработок], we admit a variety of options. Nevertheless, it seems to me that today the team wants to try themselves in something completely new. We love the heroes of Psychonauts, and fantastic worlds can always give even more adventures, but so far we cannot promise anything concrete, “Shafer explained.
Continuing his thoughts on future Double Fine Productions projects, Shafer also recalled the experimental rock action Brutal Legend, which was released back in 2009. It still evokes warm feelings among developers. But getting back to that universe is a tough question for the head of the studio.
“This is a tough question. Such an emotional block. I really liked the multiplayer aspect. [Brutal Legend]and many hated RTS elements. Then you ask yourself – what project should you do? The one that you like, or the one that the audience asks for? Difficult dilemma. But for myself, I decided it this way – I will continue to play Brutal Legends every year on October 13 – until everyone in the world understands how cool this game was, “Tim Shafer jokingly replies.
As a reminder, Psychonauts 2 is out on Xbox Series X | S, PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC. It can also be downloaded with an Xbox Game Pass subscription.
