Great 240Hz gaming monitor in a futuristic design: Samsung Odyssey G7 C32G75TQSI review

The last 5 years the company Samsung actively promotes QLED and is already preparing to phase out the production of conventional LCD panels. During this time, the South Korean giant not only used the technology in its smart TVs, but also began to actively implement it in gaming monitors. Today we will talk about the latter. Recently, a gaming monitor from the company came to our test Samsung – model Odyssey G7 C32G75TQSI… The official price of this solution with a diagonal of 31.5 “in December 2023 was 49,990 rubles… The same model, but with a diagonal of 27 inches, costs 44,990 rubles

PACKAGING, APPEARANCE AND CONNECTORS

The monitor is packed in a box made of thick cardboard with color printing and cutouts for carrying. Images of Samsung Odyssey G7 C32G75TQSI with emphasis on its curvature, backside texture and backlighting are placed on the sides here.

Among the large layer of protective foam, in addition to the display itself, inside the horizontally opening box, you will find: a leg, consisting of two parts; plastic decorative ring for illumination, divided into 2 parts; wall bracket for mounting on VESA brackets; DisplayPort cable USB Type-B to Type A cable for connecting the built-in USB hub; power supply and network cable; cable holder; back cover to cover the place with connectors on the monitor; CD with drivers, instructions and proprietary software; setup and installation guides, as well as a warranty card and a bunch of other pieces of paper, including support phone numbers and gratitude for the purchase.

Despite being a gaming monitor, it doesn’t look as pretentious as most of its kind. Rather, his design can be called strict without unnecessary details. If it weren’t for the built-in illumination at the bottom and back, then guessing that this is a gaming monitor at first glance would be difficult.

Small triangular ribbed lights in the corners under the screen do not shine very much and when using the monitor do not attract much attention or distract from the work. There are 4 lights under the screen (2 on the right and 2 on the left). Some are looking directly at the user, while the other two are looking down at the surface where the Odyssey G7 C32G75TQSI is installed. The backlight is visible when you are standing to the side, as well as the glow from it if the monitor is next to a wall.

The kit includes a special ring, consisting of two halves, which is installed behind the screen and gives the monitor a more elegant look. However, this part is made of tinted transparent plastic, which dims the backlight, which makes it less bright, but at the same time less distracting during work.

The leg of the monitor, as mentioned above, consists of two parts. The wide base is made in the shape of a boomerang and is attached to the stand with a special built-in screw with a handle for easy tightening without a screwdriver. The bases and stand are made of brushed plastic and sturdy cast metal. The plastic part on the outside of the rack is removable – behind it is a built-in channel for convenient cable management. The same plastic casing has a hook for the headphones, and it turns out that they are hung right behind the monitor, and not on the sides, as in other similar devices. On the one hand, this is a very unusual arrangement, and the headphones are backlit, but on the other hand, due to the size of the screen, reaching the hook when you are already sitting is not so easy, so you have to get up to remove the headphones from the hook …

The body is made of matte black plastic, and the back is dotted with a chain-style relief that beams from the center towards the edges of the monitor. It looks very unusual, it immediately becomes clear that the designer worked on the details of the monitor’s appearance.

In front, the plastic is visible only on the lower wide frame with the mirrored Samsung logo in the middle. And here the plastic is different from the rest of the case. It is not a soft touch, but it feels velvety texture to the touch. “Ears” with recessed lighting on the lower part resemble the headlights of an expensive sports car. Under the Samsung logo, there is also a small joystick at the bottom to control the OSD.

The dimensions of the working area are 697 mm horizontally and 392 mm vertically. The screen in the monitor is curved – its radius is 1000R. This means that at a distance of one meter in front of the screen, you can look at any point on the display at a right angle. From the options, an inclination of 9 degrees backward and 13 degrees forward is available. You can rotate the screen horizontally to the right and left by 15 degrees.

The monitor can be adjusted in height thanks to an elevator mechanism built into the leg, in a range of 120 mm. At its lowest height, the screen has a distance of about 31 mm to the table surface (to the lowest point of the bulging backlight). Despite the curvature, portrait orientation is provided for this model, and this monitor looks unusual in this form.

As the test showed, the curvature of the display in a portrait position is very convenient, especially if you like to lie back on a computer chair and read some article on the Hammock.

The bezels of the monitor are only 2 mm wide on the sides and top, if you count only the outer plastic part, and 9 mm if you take into account the black frames of the display itself and the gap between the display and the plastic frame. The widest part of the frame is only 20 mm.

The thickness of the screen at the edges is 9 mm, and due to the rounded shape of the back panel, it increases from the middle to the place where the legs are attached to about 100 mm. With the stand Odyssey G7 C32G75TQSI has a maximum dimensions of 710 x 474.5 x 306 mm, weight – 8.2 kg with the stand and 6.5 kg without it.

Thanks to the included wall mount, this monitor can be hung on an arm with VESA standard 100 x 100 mm. The connectors on the device are facing downwards, so this will come in handy if you decide to hang it on the wall.

There are enough slots: two DisplayPort 1.4, one HDMI 2.0, one USB Type B 3.0 for connecting the built-in hub, two USB Type A 3.0, a 3.5 mm headphone jack and, of course, a port for connecting a power supply.

The designers did a good job on cable management, because few people are happy with the presence of visible wires, especially when there are a lot of them. Thanks to the combination of a back cover that hides the connection point, a cable holder that attaches between the light and the elevator and holds the wires, and a cable channel hidden in the leg, you can perfectly route all the wires coming out of the monitor and hide them from view.

SPECIFICATIONS

The gaming monitor is 31.5 “(80.1 cm) diagonal and uses a Samsung Quantum Dot 10-bit SVA with a resolution of 2560 x 1440 pixels (QHD). The display supports a maximum refresh rate of 240 Hz and its surface is has a matte anti-reflective coating.

The typical brightness value for this matrix is 350 cd / m2. The peak is 600 cd / m2, thanks to which the display has received the DisplayHDR600 certification. The static contrast ratio is 2500: 1. Odyssey G7 C32G75TQSI supports about 95% DCI-P3 color space, Adobe RGB – ~ 83% and about 125% sRGB. Viewing angles – 178 degrees vertically and the same horizontally.

To synchronize the refresh rate of the video card and monitor, and therefore prevent tearing and distortion in dynamic scenes, the Odyssey G7 C32G75TQSI uses AMD FreeSync Premium Pro, NVIDIA G-Sync and VESA Adeptive Sync technologies. In addition, the monitor uses the popular Flicker-free technology to completely prevent screen flickering.

CONTROL AND SETTINGS

Odyssey G7 C32G75TQSI is controlled using a small joystick located in the middle of the bottom of the screen.

After turning on the monitor and pressing the joystick, you will be taken to the quick menu, where, depending on the direction, you can go to the settings you need: left – sources, up – menu, to the right – “picture by picture” and “picture in picture” modes, down – turn off the monitor, second press – exit from the quick menu. If you do not go to the quick menu, then when you tilt the joystick in the right direction, you will quickly get to three more sections: to the right and left – select the signal source, down – adjust the volume, up – adjust the image (brightness, contrast, clarity).

The main menu in Odyssey is made in a gaming style, which Samsung experts called Super Arena Gaming UX. The main advantage of this menu is that useful data about the current monitor settings are always displayed on top of it. Thanks to them, you can quickly find out at what level the black equalizer is set, about setting the response time, scanning frequency, whether frame sync is enabled and the status of the response delay reduction mode. The currently selected picture mode is also displayed below the indicators. The manufacturer should be commended for the responsiveness of the OSD controls. The joystick works very quickly, navigation through the menu is lightning fast, including due to the smooth animation in the menu itself.

As for the main sections in the menu, there are six of them:

  • Game – this section presents various parameters related directly to games. Here you can adjust the refresh rate, brightness of dark areas (that is, increase brightness in dark places without overexposing bright areas), adjust display response time (there are four modes – from standard to MBR) and minimize input lag, and also enable frame synchronization (Adaptive -Sync over DP and FreeSync over HDMI) to prevent screen tearing. In addition, you can adjust the size of the displayed screen (different diagonals are available – from 17 to 23 inches) and enable an on-screen sight, which here you can choose from six options and adjust its position on the screen.
  • Image – this section provides display image settings. In it, you can select several available profiles, including a custom one, 4 games and 4 others (sRGB, Cinema, and so on). Standard settings for brightness, contrast, clarity, color, black level (only when connected via HDMI), blue filter, screen position are available here. You can also get information on display calibration here.
  • PIP / PBP – in this section you can enable picture-by-picture or picture-in-picture functions when connecting two signal sources to the monitor at the same time. In addition to the position and size of the window (in the case of the picture-in-picture mode), you can also switch between image and sound sources, adjust the screen format (there is automatic, where the picture from the source is displayed in accordance with its aspect ratio, and wide, where the working allotted space is completely filled with the source image regardless of the aspect ratio) and contrast.
  • On-screen display – in this section, only the interface language settings and the display time of the on-screen menu are available.
  • System – here the manufacturer has collected the system functions of the device. Available backlight control (selection of backlight zones, effect and color), function of local dimming of the backlight of the screen, volume control (when connected by 3.5 audio output sources), dynamic brightness function, control of charging function via USB hub, PC / AV mode (to increase images from an AV source when connected to the screen), version control of HDMI and DP connectors, as well as a timer for display off, auto-switching of the source, response to pressing the joystick and power indication.
  • Support – here you can not only reset the monitor settings to factory defaults, but also perform display diagnostics, update the firmware (via a flash drive), as well as get information about the current monitor settings and other important information.

TESTS AND GAMES

We were able to test the monitor on PC, Xbox Series X and PS5 in projects such as Forza Horizon 4 (PC), Cyberpunk 2077 (PC), Assassin’s Creed Valhalla (XSeX), Watch Dogs Legion (XSeX), Ori and the Will of the Wisps (XSeX), Demon’s Souls (PS5) and Marvel Spider-Man (PS5).

The PS5 was only able to deliver 1080p @ 60Hz and offered HDR tweaks and screen edges.

The Xbox Series X could be set to a maximum resolution of 1440p @ 120Hz or 1080p @ 120Hz. Also, when the FreeSync option was enabled in the settings on the Xbox, the function of eliminating interruptions and tears was active.

The monitor showed excellent results on a PC, showing a very smooth and immersive picture both on the streets of Night City in Cyberpunk 2077, and on the roads in Forza Horizon 4.

In terms of performance, the Odyssey G7 is capable of delivering 240Hz refresh rates over DisplayPort and 144Hz over HDMI.

The minimum response time for this matrix, when it switches the brightness on gray from the minimum to the maximum value, is 1 ms. We also had no complaints about color rendition and viewing angles during the tests. The colors are rich, the image is pleasing to the eye. When checking on a black screen, we did not find a single light. Thanks for this is the function of local control of the brightness of the backlight, which does its job perfectly.

As mentioned earlier, the monitor has passed DisplayHDR600 certification, which requires a 10-bit matrix with at least 600 cd / m2 brightness and local control of the backlight brightness. HDR on the Odyssey G7 C32G75TQSI is displayed in 10-bit mode with a maximum available frequency of 240 Hz.

We were able to test HDR performance not only on PC, but also on PS5 with Xbox Series X. In the first two cases, we noticed an increase in contrast and image detail. However, Series X did not find support for this monitor with high dynamic range.

TOTAL

The Samsung Odyssey G7 C32G75TQSI is one of the most amazing monitors we’ve come across in our test. It has everything you need for a gaming solution and at the same time it stands out from the competition with an elegant futuristic design, and its workmanship is simply amazing. Of the standard equipment, only built-in speakers are missing, but such solutions have never been famous for high-quality sound, so their absence is rather for the better. If you are looking for a large monitor with excellent color reproduction for work and a very fast sensor for gaming, then you should check this model.

In autumn, Samsung opened a new showroom in Moscow with display solutions for retail, hospitality, airports and games… Samsung Odyssey G7 C32G75TQSI can also be viewed in the 400 m² exhibition space. The new 219-inch display The Wall 6K is also presented there.
