The technology, taken into service, copies the analogue of Safari. Starting with the version of Chrome 86, the browser introduces a Javascript timer limit for pages in the background. They will trigger no more than once per minute. This is expected to reduce power consumption.
The Energy Saver feature is available in Chrome for Windows, Mac, Linux, Android, and Chrome OS as an experimental. You can activate it on the chrome: // flags page, and then restart the browser to apply the updates. So far, it is only in the Canary assembly.
The idea is that on the “background” tabs you do not need to check the scroll position, user interaction with advertising, and so on. And this reduces energy costs.
In numbers, we are talking about saving almost two hours with 36 open tabs open. If you play video with YouTube in the background, the battery life is increased by almost 36 minutes compared to standard values.
