Film “gone With the Wind“returned to the streaming service catalog HBO Max in the updated version. We are talking about two additional videos that talk about racial stereotypes that are exploited in the tape.
Cult movie Victor Fleming temporarily removed from the library amid protests and riots provoked by activists #BlackLivesMatter. To be more precise, “Gone with the Wind” was criticized by the screenwriter “12 years of slavery“ John Ridley.
The discontent of the filmmaker was associated with the exploitation in the tape of racial stereotypes about the pre-war South. At the same time, what kind of supporting actress is overlooked Hattie McDaniel became the first black performer to receive an Academy Award.
Now, when Gone With the Wind launches, viewers will have to watch an introduction lasting 4.5 minutes, in which a professor at the University of Chicago Jacqueline Stewart talks about the “historical context.” However, the video can be skipped. An hourly recording of the panel discussion of the tape, which took place as part of Classic Film Festival TCM in 2019.
However, the HBO Max leadership’s attempt to look “progressive” came to him sideways. The news about the removal of “Gone with the Wind” provoked a surge of interest in the film, but competitors earned it Warnermedia in the face Amazon and Apple. In the first case, the film entered the top bestseller (it can be rented or bought on Amazon video or purchase a collector’s edition on DVD), in the second – he took fifth place in the top 5 movie chart iTunes.
This is bad news for HBO Max, because the launch of the streaming platform at the end of May 2023 did not live up to expectations, failing miserably. According to analysts, on the first day about 90 thousand people downloaded the mobile application, while the platform Disney + over the same period, it was able to attract more than four million viewers.
