GameStop has been steadily and very stubbornly moving towards bankruptcy over the past few years, gradually closing outlets. This is facilitated by the development of digital stores and online sites, an ill-conceived strategy and constant scandals, which initiates the leadership of the network.
Suffice it to recall the Circle of Life initiative, in which employees were forced to impose the sale of used consoles and old discs, threatening with dismissals in case of non-compliance with the norm.
They wanted to improve the situation at GameStop by inviting the favorite of the gaming community represented by the ex-president to the board of directors Nintendo of america Reggie Fis-Aime. But the coronavirus pandemic and the start of the global financial crisis confused all the cards.
The situation was aggravated by the disregard of the network management for its subordinates and customers. In an attempt to stop the collapse in sales, GameStop refused to quarantine stores, claiming that the company allegedly sells vital and necessary goods.
Such carelessness projected a scandal, and gamers and journalists are calling for a boycott of the distribution network. Under public pressure, GameStop was forced to suspend stores in the United States.
As Jim Bell recalled, in fiscal 2019, 320 stores were closed, which had a positive effect on cost reduction. In the current year, it is expected to close 333 outlets and open another 12.
At the same time, the top manager is trying in every way to reassure shareholders and investors, arguing that the plan was allegedly not affected in any way by “recent business trends.”
