“Games on disks will soon go into oblivion”: developer Elite Dangerous shared his thoughts on the future of the industry

In an interview with the publication Gamesindustry.biz company director Frontier developersknown for its large-scale space simulator Elite dangerous, shared his thoughts on the transitional state in which the industry is today, and the impact of the global pandemic on all this.

David Braben I am convinced that in the very near future, most users will finally switch to digital products, and retail will begin to die quietly. In his opinion, the raging coronavirus infection accelerated the process of change.

“Already, you can observe how this transitional state from discs to digital is steadily gaining momentum. And that’s fine. Most likely, another two or three years will pass and the physical market will go into oblivion, we are moving in this direction,” David Braben explained.

Despite the fact that now the forecast of Braben seems somewhat fantastic, the number of users who prefer digital shopping is steadily growing. For example, Take-Two Interactive reported that over the past fiscal year, digital versions of her games had to 55% of total sales that on 17% higher than the result of the previous reporting year.

At Electronic arts and Sony the situation is similar – over the past 12 months digital copies have been 49% and 51% of the total number of games sold, respectively. Nintendo’s digital growth is also seen on Switch, albeit at a slower rate than on other platforms. True, in the case of Animal Crossing: New Horizons almost 50% of the circulation fell on the “figure”.
