Game Boy taught how to mine cryptocurrency – it will take several quadrillion years to mine one bitcoin

At the beginning of last month, a rumor spread across the network that Chinese hackers were allegedly able to hack Playstation 5 and taught her to mine cryptocurrency. Unfortunately or fortunately, the news turned out to be fake, but in reality, console mining still exists, albeit with some reservations.

Youtuber Stacksmashing conducted an unusual experiment, as a result of which he was able to start the process of mining bitcoin on the original Game boy – the iconic Nintendo handheld console released in 1989.

At the same time, simply turning on the Game Boy and starting mining will not work, since the console does not have the ability to connect to the Internet. The enthusiast was able to solve the problem with the help of a Raspberry Pi Pico microcontroller, which worked as a connecting cable for a USB adapter.

The Game Boy’s throughput in mining mode was only 0.8 hashes per second, which is 125 trillion times slower than modern ASIC miners capable of pumping about 100 terahashes per second.

This means it will take one Nintendo Game Boy several quadrillion years to mine one bitcoin.… The idea is useless, but the experiment itself looks interesting.
