Experts from Digital Foundry disassembled the broken Xbox Series S console

One of the owned Digital foundry consoles Xbox series s recently stopped working. The team decided to open the system to see what it looks like from the inside. It is worth recalling that the Xbox Series S is not intended for self-repair, so there are almost no videos with the parsing of the device on the network.

Microsoft has paid a lot of attention to detail. The Xbox Series S is a very small console measuring 27.5 x 15.1 x 6.5 cm and weighing 1.93 kg for a typical laptop. The device is equipped with a huge heatsink that cools a dedicated SoC from AMD. An 8-core processor based on Zen2 and a graphics subsystem based on RDNA2 are installed inside. The console also has 10 GB of GDDR6 RAM.

Unlike Playstation 5where liquid metal cooling is used, Microsoft’s system relies on traditional thermal grease, which is much easier to reapply. The modular design allows for easy replacement of most parts, and some screws are color coded.

The heatsink above the processor is not easy to remove, and it is even more difficult to put it back. Digital Foundry also showed an internal 512 GB SSD. It turned out to be a special version of the Western Digital SN530 NVNe solid state drive, which cannot be removed or replaced with another.

Summing up the disassembly, the Eurogamer technical department staff note that such a procedure threatens to void the warranty. In addition, it will be extremely difficult to assemble an Xbox Series S by returning the console to its original state.
