ESRB will add a note about in-game purchases with random items

American Non-Governmental Rating Organization ESRB announced the introduction of an additional icon on the covers of the games. In April 2018, she began to add a note about in-game purchases to the box with physical copies, and now she supplemented the warning with a marking about random contents.

An additional die can be found in the games:

  • offering the purchase of digital items and premium content (for example, virtual coins and other forms of in-game currency for which you can buy boxes, containers and more) for real money;
  • containing random delivery of goods.

This classification includes games with the possibility of buying any random element, including boxes with loot, projects with game-gameplay, packs of items or cards, wheels of fortune, and much more.

Labeling “lootboxes” had to be abandoned due to the incomprehensibility of the term, including the parents of minor players.

Games with paid downloadable add-ons (levels, cosmetic items, and more) will continue to be labeled “in-game purchases.”
