As noted The verge, back in 2018 Epic tried to block trademark registrations. Then the companies discussed the settlement of the conflict. However, in a new lawsuit, Epic mentions that the discussion was inconclusive.
Epic claims that Nreal’s titles are not only similar to Unreal, but that both companies are competing in the same space.
Nreal manufactures Nreal Light augmented reality glasses that project 3D objects, applications and games. The glasses are available in South Korea and are slated to launch in the US in the second quarter of this year.
While Epic does not have its own augmented reality glasses, however, Nreal Light is supported by the Unreal Engine. In addition, Epic expects the Unreal Engine “to figure prominently in the creation of the virtual metaverse, a real-time 3D social platform where friends meet to interact and enjoy.”
All of this can be confusing to customers, Epic believes.
