A year after his “cancellation” legendary video game writer Chris Avellone (Fallout 2, Fallout: New Vegas, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II, Planescape: Tournament, Pillars of eternity) decided to comment in detail on all the circumstances of the case. And this could be another blow to the scandalous movement #MeToo…
Recall that in July 2023, a certain woman named Karissa (anti-fascist, anti-racist, supporter of the movement BLM) published in Twitter several posts in which Avellone was accused of harassment. She claimed that in 2012 she got drunk with the screenwriter, after which he allegedly harassed her. Avellone allegedly was also interested in young girls, and he allegedly subjected one of Carissa’s friends to “emotional abuse.”
“Chris Avellone is a narcissistic, rude and cunning sexual predator,” the woman said, adding that Avellone was allegedly fired from Obsidian Entertainment over accusations of harassment.
An indie developer named Kelly (allegedly Avellone “touched her below her back” and tried to take her to his room) and video game designer Christie Dena (allegedly Avellone got her drunk and tried to have sex).
Interestingly, later, Karissa’s Twitter profile was closed to outsiders, and many messages were deleted. However, Chris Avellone’s “cancellation” was already unstoppable.
They refused to cooperate with the screenwriter Electronic Arts (Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order), Paradox Interactive (Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2), Techland (Dying light 2), Rooster teeth (The waylanders) etc. The only exception was the Russian studio Owlcat Games (Pathfinder: Kingmaker).
Chris Avellone himself commented on the incident in 2023 rather sparingly.
“I have nothing to say. I should have been better, but I didn’t care,” he said, adding that he had no problem communicating with Karissa for several more years.

However, a year later, the screenwriter still left the radio silence mode by publishing a long post. According to Chris Avellone, the accusations of the address were false, and Karissa and Kelly took revenge on him for breaking off relations with a certain Jackie seven years ago. As for the accusation on the part of Christie Dena, in principle there could not be any harassment, since then the screenwriter was on another continent.
It was Karissa who introduced Jackie to Chris sometime in 2013 – a year after the “harassment”. Avellone dated Jackie for about a year, after which he stopped a difficult romance. Karissa was friends with Jackie and constantly interfered with the couple’s relationship.
Why Karissa has been silent for so many years, the screenwriter does not know. The catalyst for the “cancellation” could be the interview of Chris Avellone to the portal IGN… It was after the publication of the material that the woman published the accusations, to which her friend Kelly also joined (in reality, they both do not work in the gaming industry)
The screenwriter did not have time to react to what was happening, because then from the evidence he only had a correspondence with Karissa, the character of which changed after problems in relations with Jackie had arisen. Karissa herself deleted more than 60 thousand messages on Twitter in 2023, because in the testimony you can find a lot of contradictions, as well as references to “witnesses” who refute the whole story of harassment.
“Cancellation” by Chris Avellone started at a very convenient time – on Friday, so it was impossible to extinguish the scandal. Already on Saturday, the information reached the management of Techland and Rooster Teeth, which broke off cooperation with the “problematic” partner.
When bullying begins, it is difficult to stop. The studios do not even have time to conduct an adequate investigation, because the crowd will begin to “cancel” and them for the protection of the “criminal”. Avellone also did not want to harm colleagues with whom he developed good relations. However, the writer’s statements by Rossther Teeth and Tehcland were badly hurt. Therefore, Chris took a passive observer position.
Avellone also criticized the Western media, which published Karissa’s story without even trying to figure it out or solicit comments from the writer himself. He took the materials especially negatively. Kotaku and The Gamer.
Over the past year, Chris Avellone has amassed a vast evidence base that he intends to use in court against Karissa, which destroyed his business reputation. In the near future, the screenwriter intends to share additional information.
