In the first month of this year in Europe, the Middle East, Africa, Asia and Australasia (EMEAA zone), the main triumphs became Nintendo switch, Grand theft auto 5, FIFA 20, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare and Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot. GamesIndustry.biz portal published the latest data with a link to the GSD tracker data. The report presents retail sales figures from 17 countries, as well as digital downloads from 16 of the largest publishers covering nearly 50 markets.
In January of this year, slightly more than 15 million AAA games were sold in the countries of the EMEAA zone (1.1% less than in the same period last year).
Due to the imminent end of the current console cycle, sales of game consoles decreased by 15.8% compared with January 2019, and revenue by 13.1%. The only console that boasts growth is the Nintendo Switch (+ 17%).
The Switch family of the Japanese platform holder accounts for 52% of the total number of consoles sold in retail, with the most popular product being the updated version of the flagship model Neon Blue / Red.
The increase in the number of games sold is mainly due to the increase in the number of digital downloads. Best sellers in this segment Grand Theft Auto 5, FIFA 20 and Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege. In the markets presented in the report last month, a little less than 8.45 million full versions of games were downloaded.
In case of boxed versions of games there was a slight decrease to the value of 6.6 million copies (-5.6%). First of all, such low indicators of the last month are associated with a shortage of large game projects. For comparison, in January 2019 were released Resident evil 2 and New Super Mario Bros U Deluxe.
As for the relationship between the methods of distribution of games, here is the leader “numeral” with an indicator of 66% versus 34% in the case of boxed versions.
Charts by country, in general, look similar, with a few exceptions. For example, Finland’s love of hockey allowed the NHL 20 simulator to be on the second line of local sales. Fans of Japanese games from Portugal allowed them to break into the Top 6 Doraemon and two games of the Dragon Ball series. The only game on the chart with a single passing mode was action Dragon Ball Z: Kakarotwho succeeded in France.
As in the case of a recent analysis of the British video game market, the French company became the most popular publisher in January in terms of the number of digital downloads (16.7%) Ubisoftwhile retail dominated Nintendo with a share of 20.4%. If you take combined sales, then the first line broke EA (14.1%). It is worth noting that the Japanese company Nintendo does not share data on digital downloads and, accordingly, is not in this rating.
50% of all monitored games sold last month were on PS4, followed by PCs (18.8%), Switch (16.3%) behind, and Xbox One rating (11.9%). And again not at hand Nintendo played the fact that the company does not provide data on the “figure”.
If we take only retail data, the leader is still PS4 (47.3%), followed by Switch (32.9%) and Xbox One (25.1%). The analysis does not take into account the data of the Game Pass subscription service.
The largest markets for the sale of games are: Great Britain (16.1%), France (14.5%) and Germany (11.8%). Success Misty Albion due to the fact that the country has become the largest market for digital downloads (15.8%), ahead of Germany (13.3%) and Russia (13.2%). Boxed versions of games in the EMEAA monitored region are the most popular in France (22.8%). Not so far were Spain (17.1%) and the UK (16.5%).
As for accessories, more than 5 million accessories, game cards and toys in the theme of toys-to-life were sold in the region (-11.9% compared to the same period last year). Revenues reached 158.9 million US dollars (-7.46%). The largest markets in this segment are: United Kingdom, France and Spain.
The most popular card for payment was a card with a face value of 10 euros. The most popular separate accessory was a set of a wireless controller Dualshock 4 with bonuses for the royal battle of Fortnite. The best-selling toy-to-life product is amiibo Dark samus from Nintendo.
