Eight years have passed since the announcement of Cyberpunk 2077 – Keanu Reeves managed to restart his career, and Ubisoft made 16 parts of Assassin’s Creed

The development of Cyberpunk 2077 is a kind of constant, without which the world of games is difficult to imagine, but very soon the release of the RPG will still take place. During the creation of Cyberpunk 2077, two generations of consoles have changed in the industry, the Quartet is no longer the freshest part of Grand Theft Auto, and CD Projekt RED has become one of the most respected studios in the world. We will tell you about these and other events that have taken place since the announcement of Cyberpunk 2077 in the material.

PlayStation 3 lost its throne

The announcement of Cyberpunk 2077 took place in May 2012 – when the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 were considered the current gaming devices in the industry. Then the representatives of CD Projekt RED indicated that they were guided by the next generation of consoles – PS4 and Xbox One, the computing power of which was supposed to allow a futuristic world RPG to truly come to life. Now we’re about to retire the PS4 and Xbox One – and Cyberpunk 2077 is still just getting ready to release.

Initially, the developers managed to keep their “promise” and release the RPG on time – before the release of the Xbox Series X and PS5, but then something went wrong in the studio. Now, after a series of transfers, the game received a new release date – November 19, that is, a week after the launch of the consoles of the new (or supernova, if you recall the words of CD Projekt RED from the announcement) generation. Thus, Cyberpunk 2077 “jumped” a whole series of gaming devices – well, there is no doubt about the quality of the picture!

Niko Bellic has ceased to be the most “fresh” GTA character

During the announcement of Cyberpunk 2077, Grand Theft Auto fans were still bowling with their cousin Roman, shaking their heads under Vladivostok FM and conquering the mysterious multiplayer of the Four. There was still more than a year left before the release of the fifth part of the cult series.

During the development of Cyberpunk 2077, the “five” had already been released three times: first for the previous generation of consoles, then for PS4 and Xbox One, and then reached the PC, where it continues to be successfully sold to this day. Ironically, Rockstar does not plan to stop there either – after the release of Cyberpunk 2077, the fifth part of GTA will be released for the fourth time: on PS5 and Xbox Series X.

Geralt came out of the shadows

At the time of the announcement of Cyberpunk 2077, the third part of The Witcher was still in development, and therefore there was no talk of any recognition of the series then. The trailers of The Witcher 3, of course, hinted that something cool awaits the players, but by that time, the creator of Fable, Peter Molyneux, had already weaned the public to trust the videos alone.

What happened next, we all remember – the third “The Witcher” made a tremendous effect, became one of the most highly regarded games in history and led to the fact that the whole world learned about the strange Slavic fantasy created by Andrzej Sapkowski. Today Geralt is an iconic character in pop culture, even receiving his own series on Netflix. And it is likely that it was thanks to the success of the game about the witcher Cyberpunk 2077 that absolutely everyone began to wait at some point.

CD Projekt RED started playing for high stakes

In 2013, CD Projekt RED shares were traded on the stock exchange at a price of $ 1.74 per share, but today the cost of one share of the studio exceeds $ 111. The success of The Witcher 3 has led to a rapid increase in the capitalization of CDPR, which once began the development of the first part of the series with a modest 15-member staff.

Since then, CD Projekt RED has only gone uphill – in May 2023, it overtook Ubisoft to briefly become the most valuable gaming company in Europe. The French publisher regained leadership in a day, but this does not detract from the merits of the Polish studio, which has shown crazy growth over ten years and is now one of the leading players on the market.

Ubisoft has released 16 parts of Assassin’s Creed

Competitor CD Projekt RED, in the fight for the title of the most expensive game studio in Europe, demonstrated a fundamentally different approach to work and since the announcement of Cyberpunk 2077 has managed to create as many as 16 Assassin’s Creed games. Not all of them were “numbered” – here we take into account the side-scrollers from the Chronicles sub-series, but the productivity of Ubisoft does not become less impressive.

While the Poles were working on Cyberpunk 2077, the French studio managed to complete the story of Desmond Miles, start something new in Assassin’s Creed: Pirates, get disillusioned with the format of the series, and finally turn it into an RPG with Origins and Odyssey. The new – the 16th since the announcement of Cyberpunk – part of Assassin’s Creed will be released on November 10 along with Xbox Series X, thus beating the RPG from CD Projekt RED by a week.

Keanu Reeves relaunched his film career and became “his” in the world of games

At the time of the announcement of Cyberpunk 2077, Keanu Reeves seemed to be in active creative search. By that time, his last successful film was Street Kings, released in 2008, but after that the actor was waiting for only setbacks. A year after the release of the teaser for Cyberpunk 2077, Reeves presented the world with his directorial debut, The Master of Tai Chi, and then starred in the fantasy action movie 47 Ronin. Both flopped at the box office.

However, while the Poles were developing a futuristic RPG, Reeves managed to restart his career – in many ways with the help of the film “John Wick”, which the audience loved. But even if suddenly his acting career turns the wrong way again, the love of the audience of gamers Reeves is most likely guaranteed forever – and all thanks to an enchanting performance at E3 2019, where he introduced his character from Cyberpunk 2077.

Battle Royals took over the industry and then seems to have let it go in peace

Cyberpunk 2077 was announced as endless survival sims took over the industry, inspired by Minecraft and then morphed into something more serious thanks to the influence of DayZ. However, while the Poles were polishing their RPG, the industry went through other metamorphoses, the main one of which was the battle royale attack.

PUBG and Fortnite actually created a new genre that took over the world for a while – at some point even outside the gaming community began to talk about “battle royals”. Once upon a time, even Prince Harry had to answer questions about the shooter from Epic Games! But over time, the hype around these games began to subside – they occupied their own niche and are now developing in e-sports with varying success. I would like to believe that it is Cyberpunk 2077 that will be able to set a new trend – for story-driven games in a futuristic setting!
