Due to the complexity of technology, The Medium will have a fixed camera – review

In our news about the presentation of the Xbox Series X, you can read that the studio Blooper team announced a horror The medium. In fact, the announcement of the game took place eight years ago, in 2012. And then the game was planned to be released on Wii U, PlayStation 3, Vita, Xbox 360, PC, Android and iOS.
Over time, the plans of developers have changed markedly. Last year the creators Observer, Layers of fear and Blair witch filed a patent for the technology of action simultaneously in two environments. And this is not just a split screen: in fact, we are simultaneously playing two games.

Due to the complexity of technology with a hero located simultaneously in two or more worlds, The Medium is now made for modern platforms: Xbox Series X and PC. The Medium is also due out on PlayStation 4 and be one of the first projects for the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X.

Due to the “severity” of technological solutions, the developers had to abandon the familiar camera behind them: with a “live” camera and action in two worlds, the players could not concentrate and they had to go around each level twice. We will follow the action from a fixed camera. This in addition will be a reference to the classic horror: Silent hill and Resident evil.
Not so long ago, the Krakow studio announced that it is now engaged in high-budget projects. And one of the first confirmations of this was a message about cooperation with the famous Platige image: Computer animation wizards help you work on The Medium. Examples of their work can be seen in the trailer.

All Bloober games are horror games, but we always try to not only scare, but also tell a story. At Layers of Fear, we solved the “work against the family” dilemma, Observer explored the limits of humanity, and Blair Witch talked about guilt and how it can absorb us from within. At Medium, we focus on different points of view.

The action of The Medium takes place in Poland in the late 1990s. Her realities are actively used in the game: in the trailer we see the Mariacki Church, and in the demo for the press, right in the middle of the forest, there is the Cracovia Hotel in Krakow, which was reproduced as accurately as possible according to the drawings and by direct shooting.

Our heroine is Marianne, and she is haunted by the image of a murdered child. Marianna was played by the Polish actress, film producer and feuilletonist Veronica Rosati, who for many years was included in the lists of the most beautiful regiments.

She arrives at an abandoned hotel in search of answers: it was here that many years ago an unimaginable tragedy occurred. A mysterious stranger played by Marcin Dorochinsky sends her there. Sorrow is also taking part in the events – the spirit of a one-armed girl in a cracked mask.

To solve some puzzles and search for passages, the player will have to separate the spirit of Marianne from the body and perform actions in other worlds. But such interventions cannot last long, and energy will be required for everyone – its clumps can be found on locations.

To make it easier for the player to navigate in two worlds, the image of the main character was highlighted in color. In the real world, muted bluish tones dominate, and Marianne’s red scarf stands out against this background. And in the reddish world of spirits her white hair is clearly visible.

Bloober at The Medium is betting on dualism. Two worlds, two soundtracks – the first was created by studio composer Arkadiush Reykovsky, and the second was worked by Akira Yamaoka, author of music for the Silent Hill series. And two stars of Polish cinema: Dorochinsky and Rosati. They were scanned in the Platige Image studio, and the characters have their movements, gestures and images. But not their voices.

The game takes place in Poland, so we needed people from here to make the Polish atmosphere look convincing. But let’s not hide – Medium is designed for the western market. We used the same solution as in Death stranding. There is also the image of Guillermo del Toro, but the voice and capture of movements is performed by someone else. Marchin and Veronika played part of the session with us, and the stuntmen did the rest.
