ESports tournament EVO Japan 2023 turned out to be at the center of the scandal: the organizers were accused of discrimination against players in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. The event kicks off on January 24th, so a list of awards has been published.
The tournament features six fighting games: BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle, Samurai shodown, Soulcalibur vi, Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition, Tekken 7 and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Participants in the first five disciplines, taking places from first to seventh, will receive cash prizes in the amount of 4.5-9 thousand US dollars.
However, players in Super Smash Bros. will not receive the money. Ultimate Only the first-place eSportsman will receive a prize – a special gamepad Nintendo Switch Pro Controller with the golden emblem of the game.
This decision outraged many fighting game fans from Nintendowho considered the announcement a bad joke. The nuance is that the press release in Japanese indicates that the remaining prizes will be announced later.
