The first week of January is traditionally a quiet time for boxed game sales. Major releases are extremely rare right after the holidays, and users continue to go through projects that they purchased before Christmas.
But this year the situation is a bit unusual. Due to the spread of the coronavirus and government restrictions, people are spending more money on entertainment. In the first week of 2023, British gamers purchased 260,000 physical copies of games (a third more than in the same period last year)…
The main driver of growth is Nintendo Switch, games for which dominate the ranking. Sales of games for Switch grew 123% over the same week in 2023.
