The global pandemic of the Chinese coronavirus forced millions to hide in their homes, and a significant number of employers transferred employees to remote work, similar measures were taken in kindergartens, schools and universities. At the same time, cinemas, museums, amusement parks and so on are closed.
This created a new global problem: people locked in four walls are slowly starting to go crazy, and stress levels are rising. Psychologists recommend in this situation to find some activity: cleaning, hobbies, reading books and so on. Therefore, many try to leave the Internet with their heads.
But the increased load creates new difficulties: experts fear that the growing popularity of streaming services may cause the network to collapse in a number of regions. Users have already recorded a number of Internet crashes in the United States, but the main concerns are related to the European Union, where the infrastructure is less developed.
Therefore, the European Commissioner for Domestic Market Thierry Breton turned to the leader in the market of streaming services represented by Netflix. He asked to degrade the quality of broadcasts, refusing to show films and TV shows in high resolution. Similar requests were sent to other major players.
Netflix went to meet the authorities. As stated in the statement, the company begins to reduce the data transfer rate in Europe, which will reduce traffic by 25%. The restriction will be valid for 30 days.
