Coronavirus breaks stereotypes – why online competitions are no worse than LAN-tournaments

Due to the coronavirus, the organizers canceled all Dota 2 LAN tournaments. Online competitions have temporarily taken their place in the season. And as it turned out, such a format arouses no less interest in the audience. Cybersport.ru explains why the transition to online is not such a big loss for the competitive scene, but in a sense, even a positive moment.

Why is it convenient for players

During the season, we repeatedly read and listened to complaints from players that they did not have the opportunity to stay at home and spend time with family and friends. This was hindered by constant flights and transfers, as well as the need to gather at the bootcamp before important competitions. Thanks to the online format, e-sportsmen can not fly anywhere or even come to training facilities. Yes, at the bootcamp – in theory – you can prepare more efficiently, but in practice there are many other factors that can affect the composition of the squad, and most of them do not depend on whether the players are in the same room.

Now all participants live in a comfortable time zone for themselves, and they do not need to spend several days on restructuring the daily regimen. In addition, all issues with logistics are resolved – no trips to the venue of the tournament, the workplace is always at hand. Esportsmen can go about their business, comfortably monitor opponents through DotaTV, noting for themselves key points and, importantly, eating dishes of familiar cuisine.

“But ping is a big influence online,” you argue. This is not entirely true: in fact, playing with high ping is quite real. Told about it Bakyt Zayac Emilzhanov in an interview after winning the ESL. Modern Internet allows you to minimize the delay, so ping has almost no effect on the level of the game of professional e-sportsmen. Problems can arise only if the fight occurs between teams from different regions.
