Close to ideal smartphone in its price segment: OPPO Reno4 Pro 5G review

In early October, we were one of the first to introduce you to a smartphone OPPO Reno4 Lite, and more recently, the older model from the series Reno4 – OPPO Reno4 Pro 5G… We have tested this device and today we are ready to tell you about it.

DELIVERY AND PACKAGING

We have received a retail sample for the international market. The packaging design of this model is the same as that of Reno4 Lite, that is, a rectangular white box made of dense material with OPPO logos on three sides and a dark aquamarine-colored cardboard “toe” with a very pleasant to the touch surface. On the front side of the “sock” are the embossed model name, company logo and information about the amount of RAM and built-in memory.

Inside, buyers will find not only the smartphone itself, but also a power adapter with SuperVOOC 2.0 fast charging technology at 65 Watt, a USB Type-A to USB Type-C cable, wired headphones with a USB Type-C connector, a silicone case, a clip for removing the SIM -tray and manual. A protective film was applied to the screen at the factory.

EXTERNAL DATA AND CONNECTORS

In Russia, the smartphone is presented in two colors – blue and black. We had a black sample on our test. The back glass cover of OPPO Reno4 Pro 5G is made in gloss black – when light hits the surface, rainbow reflections appear on it. The lower half of the back cover is dotted with a logo in the form of connected letters O and P. The device looks very solid, although its shape is quite standard – like most flagships.

The front panel of the smartphone is covered with Gorilla Glass 6. Thanks to the oleophobic coating on OPPO Reno4 Pro 5G, fingerprints are barely visible. The frame is made of aluminum with plastic antenna strips for a stable connection.

The device measures 159.6 x 72.5 x 7.6 mm. Weight – 172 grams. OPPO Reno4 Pro 5G received a curved AMOLED display with a diagonal of 6.55 inches and a resolution of 2400 x 1080 pixels. Screen refresh rate – 90 Hz, pixel density – 402 ppi.

The 20: 9 aspect ratio screen covers approximately 93.4% of the front of the smartphone. There are small frames at the bottom and top of the screen.

Unlike the younger version, which received a dual selfie camera, in the older model, the company’s engineers decided to embed only one module for frontal shooting. It is located in the upper left corner of the screen.

Above the screen is an earpiece, and a little to the right on the frame is a light sensor. There is also a fingerprint scanner under the screen.

On the back there is a block of three camera modules, bulging in the manner of the iPhone 11 Pro, laser focus and LED flash, as well as the OPPO logo.

The camera block protrudes about 2 mm from the body and another 2 mm from the block protrude three main camera modules. Because of this, on a hard surface, OPPO Reno4 Pro 5G lies with a raised right side. And here there is a high probability that the lenses will get scratched sooner or later. The complete silicone case slightly improves the situation, but does not save it.

The power button is located on the right side, and separate volume keys are located on the left edge. At the top you will find only the auxiliary microphone hole. The main interfaces and holes are at the bottom. Among them are the main microphone, a USB Type-C connector for charging and data transfer, and a multimedia speaker hole, which is also used for hands-free calls. There is also a SIM-card slot in which you can install two nano-SIM cards.

There is no expansion slot for Micro SD, so you have to be content with only 256 gigabytes of internal storage memory.

USE AND CONVENIENCE

The smartphone is light enough. The rounded edges make it comfortable to hold and do not cut your hands, but it is quite slippery, so we recommend that you immediately put a cover on it so as not to accidentally drop it. The included silicone cover should be enough for the first months.

As with most devices of this form factor, the thumb reaches about 75% of the screen.

The OPPO Reno4 Pro 5G screen is very bright. When manually adjusted, the brightness level of white is about 500 nits, and in direct sunlight, this figure rises to 800. The smartphone screen supports the display of images with an expanded range of colors thanks to support for HDR10 +.

The settings provide two display color modes – simplified (sRGB) and vivid (P3). The former is perfect for lovers of calm color gamut, while the latter achieves the DCI-P3 color reproduction inherent in cinemas, thanks to richer and more vibrant colors. Movies, TV shows and anime on the road are very pleasant to watch on it, and the embedded camera does not interfere with the consumption of content in 16: 9 format, as it is outside. The same goes for surfing the Internet and reading manga through a browser.

Thanks to the refresh rate of the screen of 90 Hz, the smartphone is very pleasant to use, the picture is extremely smooth, flipping pages or just navigating the menu is a pleasure. But the 90 Hz mode affects the autonomy, so if desired, in the settings, you can reduce the refresh rate to the standard 60 Hz. The matrix has PWM, but it almost completely disappears after turning on the DC Dimming function.

The under-screen fingerprint scanner works quite quickly and has 8 stylish animations when unlocking. Face recognition works flawlessly. Moreover, the system understands that this is the owner – even if you are wearing a mask from the chin to the bridge of the nose, which is relevant for our time.

For notifications and calls in the settings, you can set the backlight along the edge of the screen. There is also an always-on screen feature that displays the clock and date, as well as battery power and icons for applications with notifications. Like the Reno4 Lite, there are 18 stylish watches available, 12 of which are digital and the remaining 6 are analog. All without the possibility of customization.

SOUND

A speaker on the bottom and a speaker on top of the screen are responsible for playing multimedia sound, which together gives us stereo sound of the content. I had no complaints about the sound from the speakers. The volume level is quite high, no distortions were detected when watching Netflix and YouTube, as well as listening to music from the device. The speakers do not choke at high volume and sound clear enough.

The phone supports Dolby Atmos, which can be configured for a certain type of content, or give control to the technology algorithms and OPPO Reno4 Pro 5G will change the settings itself depending on the content being played. The complete headset is connected via the USB Type-C connector. Sounds average, low frequencies lack depth. We recommend changing this headset to good wireless headphones with support for the aptX HD codec, especially since the smartphone supports work with different HD Audio codecs.

CAMERA

As mentioned earlier, the main camera is equipped with three modules, laser autofocus and LED flash.

The main wide module with a Sony IMX589 sensor has a resolution of 48 megapixels (8000 by 6000) for photography, an f / 1.7 aperture and a focal length of 4.77 mm. The module uses phase detection autofocus for faster focusing and tracking of moving objects. In the daytime, the images are detailed, but upon close examination, noise is visible on distant objects.

In the evening, when using the night mode, slightly blurry photos are obtained, and there is also noise.

The module is capable of shooting video in maximum 4K resolution at 30 frames per second. At the same time, the camera is equipped with both optical and electronic stabilization, and this allows you to get rid of strong shaking when shooting in motion. But the stabilized recording quality will automatically drop to 1080p.

The second is an ultra-wide module with a 12 megapixel Sony IMX708 sensor (3456 by 2592 pixels) for photography, f / 2.2 aperture and a focal length of 2.75 mm. The shooting angle is standard 120 degrees, the module copes with its task normally.

The last photomodule is a 13-megapixel telephoto lens with an f / 2.4 aperture. It achieves 2x optical zoom and 20x digital zoom. With optical magnification, pretty good pictures are obtained, but with a minimum digital magnification, characteristic noises immediately appear. It should be noted that night mode works both at all focal length options and during video shooting. In addition, there is a manual setting where you can change ISO, focus area, shutter speed and white balance.

The main camera also supports taking photos and videos with HDR, accelerated video recording, adding stickers, scanning text, and object recognition using Google Lens. There were no complaints about the portrait mode in the main camera. The result is neat bokeh.

Traditionally, when you switch to the front camera, a blue iridescent outline appears around the embedded camera for a moment. Unlike the Reno4 Lite, the Pro 5G has only one front-facing lens.

The module on the front has a resolution of 32 MP (4928 x 6560 pixels), a focal length of 3.74 mm and an aperture of f / 2.4. The photo quality is good enough. There are modes for night, panoramic and portrait shooting, as well as adding stickers. In addition, the front camera can record video with optical stabilization at a maximum resolution of 1080p at 30 frames per second. When shooting video, you can also adjust the bokeh effect to blur the background. In the video test, the blur effect went a little on small objects such as curls of hair.

BATTERY, IRON & COMMUNICATIONS

OPPO Reno4 Pro 5G is equipped with Bluetooth 5.2, NFC and Wi-Fi 5 with support for 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz. OTG USB connection is also supported. The navigation systems are dual-band and support aGPS, GPS and GLONASS, BDS, GALILEO and QZSS. As it is already clear from the name of the model, in addition to the standard frequencies (2G, 3G, LTE, VoLTE), the smartphone is already ready to work with 5G 5G networks. The slot for the first SIM card supports the following frequencies of the fifth generation: n1 / n3 / n5 / n7 / n8 / n20 / n28 / n38 / n40 / n41 / n77 / n79.

The smartphone comes with two non-removable Li-Ion batteries with a capacity of 2000 mAh each, resulting in about 4000 mAh. The phone supports 65W SuperVOOC 2.0 fast charging. Thanks to it, you can recharge 50% in 13 minutes, up to 75% in 22 minutes and fully in 35 minutes. This is a very impressive result. In our memory, this is the fastest charging that we had to deal with in tests.

During fast charging, the maximum battery temperature was 40 degrees. OPPO Reno4 Pro 5G does not have wireless charging technology.

With everyday use of the smartphone (calls, instant messengers, watching several videos a day on YouTube and listening to music in a Bluetooth headset), the smartphone lasts 1-1.5 days.

OPPO Reno4 Pro 5G comes with 10th Android version on OPPO’s proprietary ColorOS version 7.2 shell. The core of the system is last year’s 8-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 765G processor (7 nm, 1 core Kryo 475 Prime (Cortex-A76) with an operating frequency of 2.4 GHz, 1 core Kryo 475 Gold (Cortex-A76) with an operating frequency of 2.2 GHz and 6 cores Kryo 475 Silver (Cortex-A55) at 1.8 GHz), which works in conjunction with the Adreno 620 graphics accelerator and 12 GB of LPDDR4x RAM. The built-in memory in the device is 256 GB of UFS 2.1 standard.

SYNTHETIC TESTS AND GAMES

Based on basic tests AnTuTu and 3D Mark identified the phone as OPPO Reno4 Pro or CPH2089. In AnTuTu, the smartphone scores 317673 points and takes 56th place in the ranking of Android solutions.

We were able to test this device in games such as PUBG Mobile, Genshin Impact, Asphalt 9 and World of Tanks Blitz. For several hours playing games, we noticed only the presence of rare drawdowns in Genshin Impact. The rest of the games ran smoothly, it was comfortable to play. In normal operation, the processor temperature did not exceed 35-40 degrees, and the battery was kept in the region of 31-35. In heavy games such as PUBG Mobile and Genshin Impact, the processor temperature reached 52 degrees, and the battery warmed up to 41.

RESULTS

OPPO Reno4 Pro 5G combines a sleek, modern design, a bright and fast screen for watching video content and games, and a camera with wide possibilities for filming both day and night. Is that moisture protection and wireless charging were not delivered. However, the first is not present on all smartphones more than 50 thousand, and the second is covered here by a very powerful wired charging, thanks to which you can fully charge the device while you are going to work or study in the morning. In general, OPPO has turned out to be a very solid and almost perfect device for its price.
