Sony eliminated backdoor in the Chinese version of the digital store Playstation store and now it can guarantee the authorities that local gamers will be able to download only officially released games in the region. The relevant information was published on the site South china morning post, Hong Kong’s oldest English language newspaper.
Prior to the release of the update, owners of the PlayStation 4 console in mainland China could hold certain buttons while the system was restarting, allowing them to access other versions of the PS Store digital store. In this way, they could buy and download American, Japanese, and European games that were not approved by the Chinese regulatory authorities for distribution in China.
Sony recently announced that over 4,000 games have been released worldwide for the PS4. However, in the Chinese version of the PlayStation Store, gamers have only about 150 projects available.
According to SCMP, some users of social networks claim that players who previously activated the vulnerability could still gain access to third-party servers for some time even after the update.
Sony temporarily closed Chinese PlayStation Store last month in order to work on “security updates”. Many even then associated this disconnection with a readily available backdoor.
The Chinese authorities tightly regulate the gaming market and do not allow projects that promote “wrong values” into the country.
