Team Developers Frictional Games are actively preparing for the release of their new project – horror adventure Amnesia: Rebirth… Against this backdrop, the team posted a lengthy note on the official blog Playstation, where she spoke in more detail about the key features of the upcoming game…
- Like the studio’s previous works, the new “Amnesia“tries to follow the tone of classic Gothic horror movies, inspired by the work of Edgar Allan Poe, Bram Stoker and Howard Phillips Lovecraft.
- The tinderboxes from The Dark Descent have been replaced by matches in Rebirth. Their function is similar – they allow you to disperse the darkness and carefully explore all the hidden nooks and crannies of locations. But unlike the previous system, matches are much more “alive“a resource that adds more strategic elements to a project.
- Matches can both illuminate the space right in front of the heroine, and use them to light other sources of light. At the same time, you must move extremely slowly with a burning match in your hands, otherwise you risk extinguishing it as soon as possible.
- The system also returns in Amnesia: Rebirth “reason“from the original game. When faced with something really gruesome, your character literally goes crazy, which greatly complicates the gameplay.
- In turn, the new mechanics “reason“goes even further, and the principle of its operation is tied not only to the gameplay foundation, but also to certain narrative elements. In the story, the main character Tasi suffers from a mysterious disease, and her mental state directly affects the manifestation of more acute symptoms. Thus, the players have additional motivation to monitor the state of the protagonist.
- The aforementioned system also builds an updated system of game progression and encounters with monsters. In the classic “Amnesia“, after several deaths at the hands of the monster, the game conveniently adjusted to the user, removing potential threats from locations, which is why many simply thoughtlessly ran through certain sections. In Rebirth, this will not work – every death or encounter with danger worsens the overall Tasi’s condition, which has long-lasting and extremely unpleasant consequences.
- Working on the horror game SOMA taught Frictional Games a number of important things. First, the developers have a belief in building thin narrative lines that do not rely on high dynamics and density of events. Second, they got a better understanding of how to integrate gameplay into the storyline. All of this will be reflected in Amnesia: Rebirth.
