Blood, Guts and Joe Taslim: Review of The Night Coming After Us.

In the new “Mortal Kombate“, which we recently reviewed, it turned out not as many cool fights as I would like. For this reason, there was a keen desire to watch a movie with good combat choreography. After a quick look at the list of movies with good fights, I noticed that for some reason I still haven’t watched. “The night is following us“Although I started to get to know him several times, but some urgent matters appeared. However, now this motion picture turned out to be very useful. It is remarkable for its cast, in which there are people from the very same one.”Reid“- Iko Weiss and Joe Taslim… The latter also played Bi Khan in the recent film adaptation. Mortal kombat… This time I watched everything to the end and I want to tell you about the film, because there will surely be the same fans of action movies like me who missed it.

The beginning here is a bit protracted and, despite the drama of the situation around the shooting of a peaceful village, the plot is quite simple. The protagonist named Ito (Joe Taslim) is a hardened bandit and a murderer as part of a criminal syndicate who, during the next sweep of the village, did not want to kill a little girl. Having shot his accomplices, he and his child are trying to escape from the country. At first, when the film has not yet shown itself in all its bloody glory, the numerous conversations that create exposure and a kind of jumble of characters seem superfluous. However, it all starts to work when it comes to fighting. There, the viewer already involuntarily begins to understand some depth of the history of the characters on the screen, which helps to empathize with them.

The most emotionally powerful moment occurs in the middle of the film, in a banal conversation between the main characters. It is after the brutal massacre, in which a lot of people die, that this short dialogue makes the protagonist feel even more imbued. However, not all dramatic scenes work as well as this one. In some places, the actors can replay or, on the contrary, not play out, and very predictable plot twists often serve only to link between action scenes, which, fortunately, the movie is packed to capacity.

In fact, the main advantage of this film is the staging of fights. There are many of them, and they are very spectacular, as well as cruel and bloody. Often filmed in larger and larger fragments without unnecessary editing stitches. Sometimes in the frame several techniques or combinations of blows are shown in a row without changing the angle, which is certainly impressive and allows you to enjoy cool combat choreography. Fighters show different approaches to martial arts, and depending on the character, you can see different tactics in fights. The protagonist Ito often uses grips and techniques from Judo, and Arian (Iko Weiss) relies more on the traditional Indonesian style – Silat. The filmmakers tried to do everything so that the actors and stuntmen were able to reveal themselves to the fullest.

In addition to fights, of course, there is also shooting in the film, but it is not shown as cool as hand-to-hand fights. In some places, the enemies cannot hit the heroes, and after approaching them, they enter into close combat, where, as expected, they often lose.

In addition to the presence of Joe Taslim, “The Night Is Coming After Us” with Mortal Kombat is also related to excessive cruelty, shown in close-up. Characters on the screen lose liters of blood and receive severe injuries, after which they continue to fight. At the same time, in some moments the extreme vitality is well explained, but in most cases the characters are simply phenomenally strong and strong-willed people. All this adds to the spectacle of the film and the feeling that the characters are acting at the limit of human capabilities.

I liked this action movie, and despite the simple plot, watching the fights of such masters as Iko Weiss and Joe Taslim is a pleasure. At the same time, it is worth noting other actors who demonstrated good fighting skills, especially armed with a Nepalese kukri knife. Hannu al Rashid and Julia Estell – they participate in several long and spectacular fights at once.

“The Night Is Coming After Us” is far from a masterpiece in terms of drama and screenwriting, but it is certainly a noteworthy film for all fans of good action films. If you haven’t watched it yet, I recommend that you read it. But do not forget to remove children and the faint of heart from the screen – in some places the “Mortal Kombat” shown here is too naturalistic.
