Banned Skorstriki: Our Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War Beta Experience

Editorial staff GameMAG.ru recently has already shared her impressions of the alpha test of the multiplayer shooter Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War… And at the end of last week, the owners Playstation 4 and PlayStation Pro were able to get acquainted with the beta version of the game. And it causes slight bewilderment.

As part of the new testing, gamers were able to try out all the same modes as in the alpha: 6v6 and large-scale brawls with 12v12 vehicles – Combined Arms… An additional mode appeared Assault (12v12 and a consistent fight for points that appear in different places on the map). You can also select the mode VIP Escort (6v6, one of the team members is designated as the target for the opponents, he must be protected).

Unlike the alpha, during the beta test it was necessary to pump weapons from scratch, gradually unlocking modules, perks, and so on. Treyarch promised to correct the balance. And here I want to ask the developers a question: what is happening?

As we wrote in the previous article, in Cold War, instead of killstreaks, there are speedstrikes, when the score counter is not reset upon death. However, in the alpha in the second half of the match, there was a bacchanalia, when the players used the most powerful abilities in a row.

What did Treyarch do? Increased requirements for calling skorstrik. Now the average player does not have the ability to call the second and third levels. A sufficient number of points can only be obtained by making long chains of murders, which is available exclusively to hard-core veterans of the series. The rest have to suck their paw.

In four days of testing, I saw a combat helicopter call only a couple of times. The opportunity to call the third level skorstrik on your own appeared two times – when the matches were already over. We managed to use the call for artillery support only about 5 times.
One could complain about their own skills in playing Call of Duty, but no – the user can take first place in kills and win, but still not cause the desired scorch. This is not what you expect from a studio that has been with the franchise for the past 15 years.

Yes, the error can be attributed to a beta test, but an attempt to rush from one extreme to another gives out that the developers themselves do not yet know how to balance the mechanics. Hopefully, Treyarch will be able to find an optimal solution for release, as players have been deprived of a fair amount of fun.

The main star of the beta was a new map Cartel, which offers a very diverse environment for battles and several points of interest around which battles erupt. There is a tunnel in the form of a river mouth blocked by a dam, several buildings, a field with grass in which you can hide, a tower, and a hangar. 6v6 is played extremely cheerfully. But in 12v12 mode, it leaves a double feeling.

On the one hand, vehicles (several motorcycles) were put into the location solely so that Cartel would match the description of the Combined Arms mode, because there is no place to ride there. Therefore, players quickly forget about motorcycles. However, as a map for large-scale infantry brawls, it is perceived with a bang. The fact is that Combined Arms itself is a rather strange mode, because in Cold War there is no thoughtful team interaction, which is why Brownian movement is happening on large maps. In such realities, Cartel fits best.

Winter card Crossroads is the most chaotic. At the same time, the developers were able to get rid of the tank-sniper syndrome by cutting down the health indicators of armored vehicles. But there was a side effect – tanks began to undermine very quickly, which is why their value decreased.

As for the marine Armada, then in the beta some indecent number of snipers had fun on it, which made it almost impossible to go out into the open area. Index A.D.S. (Aim down sights) seems to have been fixed, but only in the alpha and close, the fans of shootouts at impressive distances did not hurt so much, who, moreover, can shoot a shotgun near.

As for the graphic side of the issue, the problem with textures has been generally resolved. You can only find fault with the grass on Cartel, which is displayed in low resolution. At the same time, I would like to praise the developers for adding a slider of the day for adjusting the field of view on consoles (FOV), which was so lacking in Modern warfare

Gamers also continue to complain about the system SBMM (Skill-Based Matchmaking), because of which the difficulty of the battles constantly jumps like American races. But the respawn system works perfectly, which creates a strong contrast with Modern Warfare 2019, because Infinity ward could not solve the problem.

It is also very pleasant that the players have access to detailed characteristics of the weapon (with numbers) and how exactly they affect the modification indicators. The cherry on top is the ability to customize interface elements and even remove the compass.

The first week of beta testing left a certain bewilderment among the players, although the new map pleased with the intense gameplay. Let’s hope Treyarch can sort out the rough edges, because Cold War has something to love for.
