Anthem failure taught: EA removed all online from Dragon Age 4 and makes an exclusively single player RPG – Bloomberg

Bloomberg reports that following the failure of Anthem and the success of Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, Electronic Arts changed the vector of development Dragon Age 4.

According to Jason Schreier citing knowledgeable people, EA publishing allowed the studio BioWare cut out all planned multiplayer components from the new Dragon Age, although the project was originally supposed to have a large multiplayer component. It is reported that over the past months, the developers have completely got rid of the online and now make an exclusively single-player RPG

This move, Schreier writes, was the result of several factors. The first one is Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, which as a single player only game has won critical acclaim and surpassed EA’s sales expectations, reaching over 10 million players in its first 4 months. The second reason was the network Anthem, which was widely advertised at the time of launch, but in the end was a deafening flop. EA canceled the development of the restart yesterday Anthem NEXTby channeling the freed up resources to the new parts of Mass Effect and Dragon Age

Dragon Age 4 is known to have started development back in 2015, but was rebooted in the fall of 2017 to put the game on long-term monetization elements, leading to the departure of creative director Mike Laidlaw, who later founded Yellow Brick Games. The project was officially announced in 2018. During development, some of BioWare’s management team reportedly struggled to turn the next Dragon Age back into a single-player game, which seems to have worked out in the end.
