Playstation 5 by default outputs an image in a High Dynamic Range (HDR) container on compatible displays, including standard dynamic range (SDR) content. However, it looks like even if HDR is forcibly disabled through the system settings, the console still does not know how to correctly play the original SDR content… The drawback was noticed in Digital foundry…
By words by DF Alexandra Battaglia, this is clearly seen in backward compatible titles. The problem manifests itself in the form of the Black Crush effect (dark shades merge into a black porridge), as well as other changes in tones and colors… The difference is not so dramatic, but a direct comparison of the same game played in SDR on PS4 Pro and PS5 shows that there are still differences in the picture, and not in favor of the new console.
Battaglia’s words later confirmed his colleague John Linneman, noting that all of Digital Foundry’s SDR recordings of PlayStation 5 games have issues with Black Crush when compared to other platforms with similar settings.
Apparently, the problem can be solved by updating the PlayStation 5 software, but Sony has not yet released the corresponding fix. For now, owners of compatible TVs are advised to play SDR content on PS5 with HDR enabled. This makes the image look more correct.
