Analysis: DualSense analog sticks only have a lifespan of approximately 417 hours

On the site iFixit material came out with disassembly DualSense, in which the author of the material tried to understand the reasons for the drift of the controller sticks Playstation 5… The basic information can be found here, and here we will mention another interesting detail from the analysis.

It turns out that Sony was using joystick modules for the controller from the firm ALPS – exactly the same are installed in the DualShock 4, Xbox One gamepads, including the Elite Controller, as well as the Pro Controller for the Nintendo Switch. According to the manufacturer’s datasheet, the stick potentiometers have an expected life of 2 million cycles, while the center-press function (when the stick is flicked) is rated for 500,000 cycles.

After testing in real conditions, it was empirically determined that when playing Call of Duty: Warzone gamepad sticks are enough for just 417 hours… Of course, this figure is highly dependent on the intensity and type of game, but if you rely on this particular number, then a PS5 owner using his console two hours a day will technically exceed the declared controller lifespan in just 7 months.

At the same time, this does not mean that the DualSense will necessarily break at this point – the malfunction can come out both earlier and later. The problem has not been resolved at the moment, so no one is immune from its appearance.

As mentioned, the main cause of stick drift is potentiometer wear. It can also be affected by the stretching of the spring in the joystick mechanism and contaminants such as dust.
