Amazon and Blizzard opt out of GDC 2023 due to coronavirus

On the eve it became known that the list of large companies that canceled participation in a major conference of game developers GDC 2023 due to the spread of the new dangerous coronavirus COVID-19replenished Amazon and Blizzard.

“Due to continuing concern about the spread of the coronavirus COVID-19, Amazon will refuse to showcase its products and participate in the Game Developers Conference 2023 (GDC 2023),” Amazon said to GamesIndustry.biz.

As with other companies that refused to go to the GDC 2023, Amazon made this decision in order to protect the health and safety of its employees, consumers and partners.

Almost immediately after the announcement of Amazon, Blizzard made its own statement.

“Blizzard will not participate in the GDC 2023 due to growing concerns about the spread of the coronavirus COVID-19. The health and well-being of our teams is our top priority.”

Besides Amazon and Blizzard, decisions on refusal to participate in the conference were also made by some representatives of gaming media. It’s already known that they will not go to the show Polygon and Gameinformer. Like game developers, they prioritize the health of their employees and do not want to take unnecessary risks.

The first companies to refuse to participate in the show were Sony and Facebook. Followed by Electronic arts and Kojima productions. San Francisco authorities imposed on city on Tuesday “state of emergency” due to the spread of the coronavirus COVID-19. After this news to number “refuseniks” have joined Unity technologies, Microsoft, Epic games, Iron galaxy, Wooga, Tencent, NetEase, Amazon and Blizzard. Activision recommends its employees to refrain from visiting the GDC 2023.

Organizers GDC 2023 has not yet announced the cancellation of the event, which is scheduled to be held from March 16 to 20 in the city of San Francisco.

Game Developers Conference is an annual gathering of professional developers from around the world. As part of the event, manufacturers hold dedicated to creating their games, hardware solutions and panel engines, share success stories and share experiences.
