After many rejections, WB Games managed to patent Shadow of Mordor’s Nemesis

Since 2015 WB Games unsuccessfully trying to patent the Nemesis system from the dilogy Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor, but until recently she was constantly refused.

Now everything has changed: On February 3, the US Patent and Trademark Office announced that the patent for the Nemesis system would come into effect on February 23. Warner Bros. will be able to retain the patent until 2035 if she pays the mandatory fees.

In a nutshell, now WB Games owns a patent for a system of randomly generated NPCs that exist in a hierarchy, interact and remember the actions of players, depending on which they change their appearance and behavior. They can also change their place in the hierarchy and change the positions of other characters in it.

Starting February 23rd, all game developers using a Nemesis-like system will have to contact Warner Bros. to obtain a license to use it.
