Action for Friends: Review of the movie “Monster Hunter”

British filmmaker Paul W. S. Andreson and his wife Mille Jovovich I liked putting on films based on fiction works so much Capcom (they were the ones who worked on paintings Resident evil) that they agreed to film an action RPG about killing monsters – Monster hunter

Capcom invited us to watch a movie and deliver our verdict: as gamers to gamers.

Monster who?

First, a little help. Currently Monster Hunter: World is the publisher’s most profitable game, as the series finally made it to modern stationary platforms and presented to gamers in an accessible, beautiful and high-quality light. According to a recent financial report from Capcom, Monster Hunter: World sales reached 24 million copies (including addition Iceborne)… And what, if not a film adaptation, can popularize the game even more?

Monster Hunter – RPG action games in which the player becomes a monster hunter. All you need to do is study the habits and strengths and weaknesses of your opponent, complete guild assignments to kill creatures and extract ingredients from them, collect plants and craft equipment. It may sound simple, but the formula works: the project easily takes hundreds of hours of life from the players, or even thousands.

To the film adaptation “Monster Hunter” also approached wisely. Anderson used a simple formula, but this film simply does not need more.

Paws are not a hindrance to monsters

In “Monster Hunter” Milla Jovovich plays the captain of a squad, who went in search of a missing group of soldiers. Mysteriously, she and several other warriors find themselves in a world where alien predatory and herbivorous animals (often gigantic) live, and immediately stumble upon a huge dog-crabworm Diabolos. What happened next is a secret. But on posters and trailers, Milla is most often presented only with a local. Together they will survive and try to get to the Dark Tower – it is she who is able to return the heroine home. A bit like Stephen King, right? But there will be no doors.

Jovivich does not understand the language of his partner, and he does not understand her. And on this topic in the film there are several terrible jokes: they say, the local is so stupid and does not understand Milla’s phrase. Fortunately, this is where the dialogue between the hunter and the ranger practically ends. The heroes silently strive to complete their task and understand each other without words. Perhaps this is how the author of the film adaptation wanted to draw a parallel between people and monsters. Or maybe everything is simpler, and this was done to avoid stupid dialogues. Either way, silence is golden, and this is one of the main advantages of the film. The story is presented mainly through the environment and actions of the heroes, and the rules of the world – by demonstrating its unusual sides

On the way to their goal, the heroes will meet creatures familiar to Monster Hunter fans, such as Diabolos, Rafalos and the Nerscills. The authors even showed their strengths and weaknesses, explained how to kill and why a part of the body of one of the monsters is valuable. There was also a place for Palico! Moreover, since the film adaptation is as loyal to gamers as possible, the filmmakers accurately reproduced the famous cooking scene. There is a lot of fan service in Monster Hunter. So much so that a viewer unfamiliar with the subject may simply not understand anything and decide that this is a cheap action movie with a strange plot. Just the scene with the attack of three fighters of different classes with simple special effects on a huge dragon. But no, it’s more about devotion to the original source.

True, especially for those unfamiliar with Monster Hunter, a very controversial phrase from a fan’s point of view was inserted from a resident of another world: “Are there no cats in your world? “

What’s the bottom line?

“Monster Hunter” is a nobrane action movie for its own, which will delight gamers with interesting angles, shots, laws of physics and a simple plot, but others may seem like a cheap attraction. It is a pity that the film ends in mid-sentence, and before us, in fact, only the prologue of history. And if you planned to watch it just for the sake of Ron Pearlman, you can get very upset – his screen time is hardly 1/10 of the whole picture.

6/10
