Ahead of release Monster hunter rise for console Nintendo Switch company Capcom held the final show of the current version of her project. Usually, journalists and bloggers are given the opportunity to feel the game live and record a visual demonstration of the gameplay, but due to the pandemic, such an event format is not possible. Instead, the developers showed the Gamemag editions an hour of pure gameplay in the form of a video presentation.
Recall that the main series Monster hunter consists of cooperative role-playing action games in which players have to fight a variety of fanged and tailed creatures. From the defeated monsters, hunters create new armor and weapons, which allows them to fight on equal terms with increasingly powerful opponents. The last part of the lineup released so far, Monster hunter world, became the most successful Capcom game in the history of the company, having sold over 16 million copies worldwide.
The first thing worth mentioning when talking about Monster Hunter Rise is, of course, the setting. The Japanese theme is not new to the series, it used to be seen, for example, in Monster Hunter Portable 3rd… However, Rise is clearly imbued with the spirit of the Land of the Rising Sun much stronger than its predecessors. New monsters, locations, armor and weapons in one way or another draw inspiration from the classic Japanese medieval culture, which gives the project a kind of charm. The village of Kamura, which acts as the central hub in Monster Hunter Rise, is literally drenched in it.
Another distinctive aspect of Monster Hunter Rise is the Palamutes. This is a new kind of companion dogs, which are not only able to fight together with their owner, but also act as a kind of transport to move around locations. At the same time, the favorites of the public, cats, Paliko, also did not disappear. The developers emphasize that they managed to maintain a balance in the abilities of the assistants, focusing the skills of the Palamutes on moving and exploring the world around them, and Paliko on supporting the hunter with a variety of amplifying or attacking means.
Along with this, a new companion shop will appear in the game, where you can purchase Palamutes and Palikos with a random color and a set of abilities. The expansion of the menagerie will allow you to alternate assistants from mission to mission, instantly choosing the most appropriate set of skills against a particular monster. Moreover, pets will even be allowed to be sent on missions designed specifically for them, while you fight monsters in another region.
As for the monsters themselves, the developers seem to have taken into account the claims of the players to Monster Hunter World and relied on a variety of types of opponents. The provided gameplay demo focused on two creatures – the Khezu wyvern, which debuted back in Monster Hunter Freedom 2, and a cross between a bat and a monkey Bishaten. Monsters definitely have unique behaviors and preferred zones in the area. So, for example, Hezu tries to escape to dark caves anyway. The lack of sight of this monster allows him to feel very comfortable in giant cave systems, and his ability to attack with electricity can easily defeat anyone who dares to enter his lair.
In turn, the dangerous Bisyten in the humid and dense jungle feels at home. The fruits growing on trees for the monster are both food and a deadly weapon. And if the intricate forest paths are too tough for hunters, then the beast itself moves through its lands with unprecedented grace.
A new tool, the Prutozhuk, is a great help when hunting, which directly develops the ideas of the grappling hook from Monster Hunter World. With the help of Prutozhuk, players can easily maneuver in space, making high jumps and jumps. This not only helps to quickly reach difficult-to-reach hills, but also opens up a wide potential for evading attacks from large monsters. At the same time, the fishing line can and should be used for attack, since each of the 14 types of weapons received a whole set of techniques that directly use Prutozhuk.
It is clearly seen that the developers have focused precisely on the combat component of the game, sometimes sacrificing other aspects of the gameplay. Battles have become faster and more spectacular, and some of the secondary mechanics associated with resource management have sunk into oblivion. Overall, this may negatively affect the overall, but it is too early to judge at this stage.
The mechanics of saddling monsters also received their logical development. With the help of the same Prutozhuk, players will be able to directly control the saddled creatures, forcing the monsters to engage in fights with each other or simply bang their heads against the wall. It is noteworthy that the locations are made with such a possibility in mind, which is why the lower levels of the zones are quite flat and empty, which allows players to manage monsters and Palamuts without any problems.
The world looks quite intricate in its structure. It is distinguished by a large number of vertical zones and elevations. Scattered among the local landscapes are small representatives of flora and fauna, the collection of which opens up access to various improvements, ranging from a banal increase in characteristics to unique items that make monsters go to war for territory.
The gameplay presentation contained footage from locations such as Flooded Forest and Ice Island, both of which hunters can travel to as part of their adventures in Monster Hunter Rise. Two other places of interest in Rise are Sandy Plains and Lava Caves.
Each of the available zones opens up more and more opportunities for players to explore levels, collect new materials, get to know local animals and overcome challenges. When traveling across different lands, hunters need to take into account not only the unique creatures that inhabit them, but also do not forget about all kinds of obstacles associated with the peculiarities of the landscape.
For example, Ice Island is a frozen archipelago where a huge dragon used to nest. According to legends, many of the strongest warriors died in an attempt to slay the monster, and the remains of their ships can still be found along the coastline. In turn, the Flooded Forest is a secluded and quiet place, dense and humid forests await you there.
Monster Hunter Rise looks interesting and promising enough. The project still has a couple of controversial points that, if implemented incorrectly, can spoil the impression, but the final opinion can only be made after the official premiere. Now it seems that the new product from Capcom has every chance to please both beginners and veterans.
