Sony completed the reorganization process in early April SIE Japan Studio, as a result of which only Team Asobi expanded into a full-fledged studio.
Despite the de facto closure of Japan Studio, the company recently reiterated its commitment to making Japanese games. In a new interview for GameInformer, the president PlayStation Studios Hermann Hulst stated that they still love Japanese games and continue to invest in developers from this region…
“I will say that in a sense we are still a Japanese company. This is our legacy. It is still a part of who we are. We love our Japanese games.
We are building up Team Asobi under the leadership of Nicolas Duce and are now investing in this team. Also, people sometimes forget that we have Polyphony Digital operating from two locations. We are also investing in our Tokyo-based external development team who have worked with studios such as FromSoftware and Kojima Productions.
So we are very interested in Japanese development and we like it … In my opinion, this is such an important part of the PlayStation identity that I don’t think we will ever give up Japanese or Asian development in general. “
In the same conversation, Hulst commented on the rise of PlayStation Studios in general:
“We are investing in our amazing teams, recruiting new developers and continuing to focus on quality. We continue to focus on experiences that I think matter and sometimes can only be delivered by us. This is what I stand for. And I guarantee that we will continue along the same path. “
According to his May announcement, Sony Interactive Entertainment is currently developing over 25 PlayStation 5 titles, almost half of which are new IPs.
