one. Introduction
Siege Survival: Gloria Victis is a hardcore survival simulator in a besieged medieval castle, similar in structure to This War of Mine, but made in isometric view with full 3D graphics.
Success in the difficult craft of survival rests on two pillars – keeping our handful of hard workers alive and equipping the bastion fighters with everything they need to defend themselves. We do not control the latter, but their effectiveness in battle directly depends on our actions. If the bastion falls, the campaign will end with a gamer. The death of the hard workers who are in our direct subordination also means the end. And it is very easy to bury progress – the balance is built according to the principle of “dominoes” – one serious oversight attracts a bunch of problems with far-reaching consequences.
The gameplay is divided into two main cycles – day and night. Each has a fundamentally different gameplay, but both are united by one rule. You need to act quickly and wisely.
In the daytime, we fix everyday issues and supply the brave warriors of the bastion. We do raids at night.

2. Important Tips
The game chews up the main nuances of mechanics in training in the first days of the siege. But I will still give a dozen tips that may not seem so obvious.
- Before a night out, carefully examine the contents of your warehouse and estimate what you are going to build and manufacture the next day.… Remember the domino principle? In one of the playthroughs (and I didn’t manage to get through the game on the first try), I held on perfectly for more than 10 playing days. But on the night before the siege, everything went awry. It seems that the soldiers are well equipped, and the food is full, and the warehouses are full of wood / iron / fabric … But I completely forgot about the water. That my subordinates, that the soldiers of the fort woke up in the morning with a strong thirst, everyone’s fighting spirit fell. The workers became incredibly slow, they didn’t make much progress. The soldiers suffered losses. By the next night, a couple of my hard workers died of thirst, and I could not make up for the losses in time and get out of the resulting economic hole. The game had to start over. Therefore, I recommend that you carefully study all available resources before an act of night looting.
- Create your own stunts in night missions… You can just throw away many items anywhere in the city, they will not go anywhere on the next outing (unless the food deteriorates over time). Why carry shovels, jewelry and keys to the castle if they are not used in the castle in any way, and even take up inventory slots? These things can simply be collected in a heap at the secret passage to the castle, so that on the next excursion, say, take the accumulated jewels from there and go to the merchant. The main thing is to remember where you left what.
- Access all areas of the city and passages to the castle as soon as possible… To do this, you will need to find and make shovels with torches. If for some reason you were discovered by the guards, or even flared up, finishing off one of them, the game will politely recommend not to meddle in the city for the next few nights, because the security there will be strengthened. But the “wanted level” only works in the area where you are caught, it will be relatively safe to collect supplies in the rest. So do not completely abandon night operations while you are cleaning the streets of one area, in another you will be gradually forgotten, having reduced the guard for the next night. Therefore, it is worth getting access to the entire city as soon as possible.
- Slow down time in the daytime… The speed of the passage of time is adjusted in the upper right corner of the screen. Do not hesitate to slow down time from the very beginning of the day in order to distribute commands to all four workers as quickly and thoughtfully as possible.
- Burning heaps of corpses in the city is not at all necessary (except for one)… If you see a small alley with resources, which is blocked by a green pile, then it is not at all necessary to spend a torch to burn it. I usually did this: empty the inventory, run through the pile, collect everything in the alley, run back. Yes, your character has a small chance of getting a mild form of the disease, but it will most likely go away on its own if you continue to contact the corpses until he recovers and avoid being in the rain for a long time. But there is one practically obligatory pile blocking the way to the island of smollers. You don’t need to regret the torch for her…
- Feed the animals, especially the chickens! Do not forget to visit the chickens and pigs at your base. Special food is made on the table with a cleaver and requires spoiled food with grass. Chicken eggs will save you from hunger, and pigs will provide fertilizer for the beds. If there is no food, you can feed our smaller brothers and simple food, but on a regular basis it is waste in its pure form. However, in a critical situation, you can stab an animal for meat. Over time, the role of pigs can be replaced by the building “composter”, but with food, the game in the last third will not be very generous, it is better to save the chickens.
- Keep Sims Well Fed, Healthy, and Sleep… In the lower left corner, we can observe the statuses of our wards. This is the degree of exhaustion, thirst, hunger, disease and morality. Gray status means that everything is fine with the hero. White is a mild degree of ailment that does not affect the speed of work, but starting with yellow, you should immediately get rid of the ailment, otherwise the hero will perform his duties extremely slowly. Red is the scariest stage. After it, death occurs, and if it is a question of lack of sleep, the character will simply fall asleep on the spot.
- Send one hero to dig in the afternoon… There are ruins in the castle, where you can endlessly, albeit extremely slowly, dig up random objects. Sometimes you can find very good things there, say, a brick or an iron ingot. If you correctly distribute human resources, 3 or even 2 pairs of hands will be enough for you for all things within the walls of the fortress. And free resources will never be superfluous.
- Craft resources in multiples… The crafting time for some resources does not depend on the amount. A batch of 5 bricks is prepared exactly the same as one. So it is with the drying of fibers and pieces of meat.
- Restarting is not entirely fair, but effective… Many will consider this a cheat, and they will be partly right, but I will still mention this hint. The game will automatically overwrite the save at the start of the next day. So if you misused your time and resources during the day, and at night you also caught the eye of the guards, but you really do not want to reap the fruits of your mistakes, there is a way to change what you have done. You can simply exit the menu and continue playing from the beginning of the previous day. On siege days, when restarting, you can even manipulate the most convenient type of enemy intrigues: a volley of burning arrows, rotten corpses of cows or boulders. But when you start a new day, you will overwrite the save. In this case, you will have to come to terms with the burden of past mistakes, or start from the very beginning.
3. Bastion
The supply of the bastion is your main task in the game. Red marks the might of our army, blue marks the might of the enemy. If the enemy is superior to us in strength, the battle will most likely pass with losses, which will have a very detrimental effect on further survival.
But in this screenshot you can see that there is only one day left before the attack. Moreover, you can manage to turn the tide right during the battle itself. The first thing to look out for is the bastion’s problems. It is pointless to simply send thousands of swords to hungry, thirsty and naked-assed fighters, hoping for success.
In the image above, you can see that our soldiers are now lacking melee weapons (red sword and ax icon in the “Bastion Problems” panel). If there are no problems, but the forces are still not in our favor, we need to supply the bastion according to the principle “what we receive, then we send it”. The army will not accept 5 quivers of arrows if it has only 3 bows, and will simply return some of the arrows back. But you can send another bow with a quiver.
The badge with faces and the number 14 is the garrison, and the number means the number of people on the walls. When you hover the cursor, we will see the details: how many of them are ready for battle, how many are wounded, how many are sick, and how many have died. We’ll also see a color-graded morale icon.
Below is a bar with the strength of the equipment and a slide-out panel with details (appears when you hover over).
Even lower (with the number 12) is the strength of the fortifications. It can be increased by sending stones and bricks. Sometimes we find parts of the ballista in the city, strengthening the fortifications at once by 3.
The last line is double – the remaining food is in green, and the water is in blue.
Only food specially prepared on a fire can be sent to the soldiers, and they only take pure water. Our castle workers can eat and drink all sorts of rubbish with the possibility of getting sick.
four. The buildings
Available initially:
- Warehouse… The main building in the game where we build and manage resources. After the improvement, we get access to 5 additional buildings.
- Chicken Coop / Pigsty… In the paddock opposite the warehouse, we have pens with chickens and pigs. It is advisable to periodically visit and feed them. Hunger status is marked separately on each animal. If desired, the animals can be slaughtered for meat, but this is an almost free source of eggs and fertilizers.
- Bedroom… If you stand facing the warehouse, the bedroom will be on the left. We can build up to 4 beds there. You can also use them in the daytime. In addition to satisfying the natural need for sleep, the bed enhances the healing effects and protects against rain, which can lead to illness if left under it.
- Tree stump… It is built on your base during training. Allows you to turn wood into firewood and boards. When upgraded, it allows you to get more firewood / planks per unit of wood. Recommend to improve as soon as possible. The necessary materials can be obtained already on the second night (for example, to have time to exchange at the merchant Mode just north of the first aisle).
- Bonfire… Like the goat tree stump, it is built on the first training day. On it we prepare portions of food. When improved, it allows you to purify dirty water by boiling, and also opens a profitable recipe for 4 servings of food at once. The only catch is that the upgrade requires a pot, which is produced in a tier 2 oven. Also, a fire cannot be set on fire with arrows of fire, which is logical.
- Crafting table… Allows you to craft tool kits and torch. When upgraded – arrows and shovels.
- Butcher’s table… Allows you to cut animal carcasses into pieces of meat and fiber and prepare animal feed. Produces more meat and fiber from carcasses when improved.
- Repair shop… Allows you to repair broken weapons and armor. On the first level, there are axes and gambesons. When upgraded – swords and armor.
- Herbalist workshop… Various medicines, bandages and cloth are created on it. Cloth and better medicine with bandages are available upon upgrade.
- Dryer… Allows you to dry meats, vegetables and turn grass into fibers. The process is extremely slow. You can’t improve.
- Punch… Converts organic materials into garden fertilizers. Required if your pigs have died or you are using two beds.
Important! All subsequent buildings are available only when the warehouse is upgraded to the second level.…
- Bake… Allows you to craft iron ingots. When upgraded – bricks and pots.
- Rainwater collector… Allows to collect morning dew and rainwater. Especially useful in rain. Improvement increases collection.
- Garden bed… A source of greens and vegetables. Sowing requires fertilizer and water (dirty is also suitable). You can’t improve.
- Rat trap… An incredibly useful thing, it allows you to get meat in exchange for bait, for example, grass or rotten food. From the middle of the game, you will feel an acute shortage of meat, which is necessary for the largest portion of food. Doesn’t get better.
- Weapons workshop… Allows you to craft weapons and armor. On the first level there are axes, bows and gambesons. When upgraded – swords and plate armor.
- Trebuchet (available towards the end of the game)… A kind of doomsday weapon that allows you to weaken the power of the enemy army by 3 units in one well-aimed shot. Available only during the siege, requires a pot of oil to fire. You can pour oil into the pot only during night outings on the northern island (you can’t get there without a torch). Before shooting, you need to choose one of three distances, if you have carried out a full reconnaissance before the battle, the desired one will be highlighted in green.
five. Key Resources
- Wood… The most important resource in the game. It is obtained during night forays into the city, or during the dismantling of buildings. Firewood and boards are made from it on a hemp with a goat. Wood that is not processed into firewood or planks is used to construct some initial structures such as a campfire, workbench, and dryer.
- Firewood… Chopped wood is used for the production of almost any vital things: cooking food, making steel or bricks in the oven.
- Planks… Manufactured from wood. Required for the construction of most buildings in the game.
- Jewelry… Absolutely useless in the castle. Their only function is the ability to exchange with a merchant for something more valuable. Therefore, I recommend not to drag them with you to the castle, but to throw them out on the streets, preferably next to the merchant, so that they do not take up space. When you need something to exchange, just pick them up and pay.
- Greens and Grass… Needed in large quantities for a variety of things. It is used for cooking food (including animal feed), making medicines. In the dryer, you can turn it into fibers, but this is very time consuming. It is used as bait for catching rats. Well, when used by the character, it slightly satisfies hunger and heals from diseases. Can be grown in the garden or found in the city.
- Fiber… Required for many useful items such as bandages, torches, and cloth. Made from grass in a dryer.
- the cloth… Crafted from fibers in the herbalist workshop. Required for bandages, making armor, beds, and some structures (such as a rainwater collector).
- Pure water… It is necessary for our subordinates and the soldiers of the bastion to drink it. The need for the manufacture of medicines and can be used for watering the beds. It is obtained from the rainwater collector, is often found in barrels on the streets of the city, and is obtained by boiling dirty water over an improved fire.
- Dirty water… It is more rational to use it for watering the beds and turning them into clean water by boiling. If you drink it dirty, your charges will get sick.
- iron ingot… It is necessary for the manufacture and repair of weapons, armor, arrows, construction and improvement of some buildings. You can find or trade in the city, but the main source of your iron is the furnace.
- Bricks… Needed for building and upgrading. They go to the bastion to strengthen the walls.
- Pots… Needed to upgrade some buildings. They are also used as trebuchet projectiles. But first you need to fill them with oil during night outings on the northern islet.
five. How to get rid of the patrolmen?
First of all, you need to ask yourself another question – why kill the guard? In the bottom line, this will bring you one broken weapon and a bunch of hassle in the form of increased security of the area for the next few nights and the need to spend bandages to heal your ward’s wounds. But if you need to complete an achievement or want to open the path to one chest, here are a couple of tips.
First, take a hero with a melee bonus like Bertram…
Second, equip him with a weapon, preferably a sword.… To do this, you need to take the repaired sword with you on the mission and make sure that it is equipped in the lower left corner next to the character’s portrait.
I recommend fighting strictly one-on-one, and stealth attacks to strike first. If the guard does not want to turn away and bare his back, try to lure him out with a loud sound of running, wait and attack from behind. I do not recommend killing more than one soldier in a sortie, because on the second there is a risk of simply dying.
6. Conclusion
This guide will help you overcome the main campaign of the game and enjoy all the pleasures of the life of a swineherd in a castle besieged by the Vikings.
