PACKAGING, SET, APPEARANCE AND CONNECTORS
Since the monitor in the pricing policy is classified as an economy class, then, accordingly, its packaging should not incur extra costs. All information about the product is printed on a box made of thick cardboard in black and white. On the back there is the ViewSonic logo – three cute birds sitting on a tree, under which there is an inscription “See the difference”. On the other hand, a place has been allocated for the model name and main characteristics, and more detailed information and logos of supported technologies were scattered along the sides of the box. For easy portability, there is a convenient plastic handle on top.
The inside of the monitor and accessories are protected with foam. A complete set without frills, which is expected for economy class monitors: display; two separated parts of the leg-stand; power cables and HDMI; plastic ring-clip for cables, brief instructions and warranty.
At first glance, you will not immediately understand that the ViewSonic XG2405 is a gaming model. In any case, the design of the monitor indicates little to this. Its assembled dimensions are 540 x 521 x 239 mm. Weight without stand is 3.4 kg and with stand only 6.7 kg. Outwardly, it is quite austere – with a traditional “frameless” design.
The frames on the three thin sides are about 2 mm thick, and the bottom one is traditionally the widest – 17 mm. In the middle there is a ViewSonic inscription, and a monitor status LED hangs down closer to the right edge, which usually glows blue when the ViewSonic XG2405 is working. The thickness of the screen along the frame is only 9 mm, and in the middle the thickness of the case expands due to the built-in filling up to about 50 mm. There are also two speakers with a power of 2 W each – the sound quality is weak, so they are here, as usual, for “every fireman”. For normal sound, you will have to connect a separate audio system.
The body is completely made of matte black plastic, and the flat base of the leg has a brushed metal texture. It looks not very premium, but practical, since we did not notice fingerprints.
The leg by its design looks stable and reliable. And the functionality cannot be taken away from it. You can change the position of the screen in height in the range of 120 mm, rotate the display to the right and left by 45 degrees, adjust its tilt by 5 ° away from you and 20 ° towards you, and also rotate the monitor screen to portrait orientation by 90 °. The latter option is convenient for connecting wires to the connectors, since here they are directed downward. This is good for anyone using a wall mount monitor. Support for VESA 100 to 100 brackets is provided. However, you first need to remove the stand, which is already installed on the monitor out of the box and attaches exactly to the holes for the bracket. There is also a small hole in the rack, into which a special ring is installed, which allows you to organize the wires by hiding them behind the rack. In addition, there is a handle for easy carrying of the monitor, and at the very top there is a pull-out hook for headphones. The location is not the best, because if you place the monitor against a wall, you will have to move it away if you decide to use this headset hook. This will waste extra desk space. The hook extends just 2 cm, so the wide rim headphones will hang unstably on the hook, and it’s easier to simply slide them onto the C-pillar.
As for the connectors, in addition to the standard 3-pin power connector, there are two HDMI version 1.4, one DisplayPort version 1.2 and an audio jack for 3.5 mm headphones. There is no USB hub.
TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS AND SETTINGS
This 24-inch gaming monitor uses Panda’s 8-bit (6-bit + FRC) IPS panel with 144Hz refresh rate and FHD resolution (1920 x 1080 pixels). ViewSonic XG2405 supports about 104% sRGB and ~ 72% NTSC. A WLED panel is used to illuminate the matrix. Brightness – 250 cd / m2, the panel does not even support the basic DisplayHDR400. Static contrast is 1000: 1 and dynamic contrast is 80,000,000: 1. Viewing angles are fairly standard and are 178 degrees horizontally and vertically.
There is support for Flicker Free technologies to prevent screen flicker and a blue filter that reduces eye strain. In addition, the ViewSonic XG2405 supports AMD FreeSync Premium technology, which synchronizes the on-screen frame rate with the graphics card, eliminating blur and preventing distortion in dynamic scenes.
Five control buttons of the OSD settings menu are located on the rear side on the right side. You can easily find them if you put your fingers behind the monitor on the right. The button below is responsible for turning the monitor on and off (if you hold down the key for a few seconds), as well as closing the menu. The button on the top allows you to open a quick menu, where by default you can configure screen modes, select a signal source, adjust volume, as well as brightness and contrast. The three buttons in the middle open the main menu and are used to navigate (along with the topmost one) through the menu. The controls are not the most intuitive, and you need to get used to, since the buttons are all the same shape – you can just accidentally press the wrong one.
The menu itself has no distinctive features. It is absolutely standard for the entire ViewSonic brand. At the bottom of the window, the current information about the current resolution and refresh rate is displayed, and there is also a scale for the set brightness level and an icon signaling the inclusion of the ECO mode.
The menu is traditionally divided into six tabs. In the first, only the choice of the input signal is available, in the second, only the sound adjustment, and in the third, only the choice of the viewing mode, where there are options adapted for various game genres or more standard use, including for watching video content, surfing the Internet and work with texts. There are various options available in the color settings related to color rendering, brightness, contrast and dynamic range. In the section “manual adjustment” there is a possibility of adjusting the sharpness, response time, dynamic contrast expansion, blue light filter control and so on. In the “setup menu” tab, the manufacturer hid the AMD FreeSync Premium adaptive sync control, as well as standard settings associated directly with the built-in menu. It is localized into Russian.
TESTS AND GAMES
We were able to test ViewSonic XG2405 on PC, Xbox Series X and PS5 in projects such as Forza Horizon 4 (PC), Death Stranding (PC), Demon’s Souls (PS5), Control Ultimate Edition (PS5), Yakuza Like a Dragon (XSEX ) and Ori and the Will of the Wisps (XSEX). Despite the fact that we have a QHD monitor (2560 by 1440), the PS4 Pro did not allow setting the resolution higher than Full HD, which made the picture slightly fuzzy. In turn, on Xbox One X, you can set the resolution to 2K, which makes the image clearer.
On a PC, the monitor felt best and was able to show a very smooth and beautiful picture without tearing and artifacts. The PS5 only managed 1080p 60Hz when connected to the ViewSonic XG2405. On Xbox Series X, you could set the maximum resolution to 1080p @ 120Hz.
The monitor is capable of delivering the declared refresh rate of 144 Hz via both Display Port and HDMI. The gray-to-gray response time of this panel is 1ms, and the average is about 5ms.
Since the monitor uses an IPS-matrix, then, as expected, everything is in order here. Color rendition is at a fairly good level. The backlighting is uneven, and in black we noticed a microscopic light on the right side of the screen.
RESULTS
Acquaintance with the ViewSonic XG2405 model left a very pleasant impression on us. Praise deserves a very constructive and reliable stand and a matrix good enough for a budget model, both in terms of color rendition and performance. I didn’t like the controls in the on-screen menu, which takes a long time to get used to. Otherwise, this is a high-quality and convenient gaming monitor at a fairly attractive price.
