Dangerous monsters, non-linearity and firearms: Dying Light 2 developers have shared new game details

Polish studio Techland has published a new video dedicated to the zombie action movie in development Dying light 2… In him Timon Smectala, senior game designer of the project, answers the most popular questions from fans, along the way telling a lot of new things.

  • In terms of the total size of the world, Dying Light 2 is approximately twice the total area of ​​all maps of the previous game. In digital terms, we are talking about as much as 7 square kilometers of space available for study. Particular emphasis is placed on the verticality of the levels – a large city with many tall buildings awaits players.
  • In addition to the standard zombies, Dying Light 2 also introduces new unique types of infected. One of them is a monster with sharp branches spreading out of its back. It is noteworthy that meetings with this monster can be minimized – it all depends on the decisions that the players will make during their passage. The Techland team is going to tell more about the monsters a little later in a separate article.
  • During the daytime, most zombies try to hide from the rays of the sun, hiding in the shadows of buildings and other reliable shelters. However, this does not mean that it will be impossible to meet monsters during daylight hours – some of them still move along the streets and rooftops.
  • In turn, those groups of monsters that are hiding in buildings can also be really “activated”, for example, by creating a lot of noise. This can be tactically used by unleashing zombies on bandits that interfere with you.
  • In the world of Dying Light 2, there is almost no place for classic firearms. Players will be able to use long-range weapons such as bows, throwing weapons, and more, but you shouldn’t count on assault rifles. One of the exceptions to this rule is a shotgun assembled from improvised trash, which can be used simultaneously with melee weapons. But it will also be enough for you for just a few shots.
  • Hookcat from the first game will return in Dying Light 2, but will undergo noticeable changes. The developers wanted to give this game mechanics more realism, so they abandoned the idea of ​​excessively free movement, instead tying everything to physics simulations. In addition, the grappling hook can now also be used in combat.
  • The ability to drive cars and other types of ground vehicles will not be available in Dying Light 2… Instead, the focus is on traditional franchise moving methods, including parkour and the hook mentioned above.
  • The decisions players make as they progress through Dying Light 2 have a direct impact on the state of the game world and the course of the story. Conditional “important” choices determine the general course of the plot and the ending, and alternative outcomes of secondary quests lead to small but noticeable changes (for example, you can choose which of the characters will live and who will die).
  • Locations in Dying Light 2 are divided into separate generalized zones. Each of them can be under the control of one or another group. Accordingly, depending on your actions, the appearance and content of the City in the game will change dramatically.
