Many factors have influenced the success of Fortnite Battle Royale. It includes infectious dance emotions, humane “cosmetic” monetization, and a constant drive of activity in the form of a seasonal pass, and a fun approach to the inevitable cruelty of play, which makes the game acceptable even for children and adults with fragile psyches. But the main thing is how powerful a stream of Fortnite ideas spilled into reality, turning an ordinary battle royale into a cult sensation.
Today we will recall one of the main ways to make people talk about the game even those who have never held a gamepad in their hands: game events.
“Movie night”
Alas, no matter how good the company’s intentions are, the scythe, as expected, found on the main stone of our time: copyright. As a result, those who attended the Royal Party were able to see – depending on where they lived – “Start“,”Batman Begins” or “Prestige“. Outside, alas, were the residents of Canada, Puerto Rico and Russia: they did not get a single Nolan film. But they were allowed to watch digital copies of musician Diplo, rapper Young Thug and singer Noah Cyrus.
It was forbidden to record and broadcast the event, so only fragments of the show can be found on the Web. In general, nothing special.
So far, the company has not announced new film screenings.
“Storage”
A number of small and seemingly insignificant events led to this event. Initially, a rocket was launched in the game, which flew through a series of wormholes and left a rift in the sky. Then a huge purple cube fell out of the rift, which was nicknamed Kevin. Then there was a situation with butterflies, during which everyone was thrown into another dimension.
All these events laid the foundations for the most unusual gaming event. As you know, when any weapon is removed from Fortnite, it is marked as “moved to storage.” And now we were finally shown exactly how the developers represent this very repository! During the event, all the runes left by Kevin lit up, the hatch opened, and the players descended into a place very similar to a space with butterflies. And there they saw steles with six previously removed items from the game: the item that was “released” by the maximum number of players had to return to the game.
After the most popular block crashed, a volcanic eruption began, destroying the Abandoned Towers and the shopping center, and in the process, the glacier split. But these are trifles: the main thing is that the favorite of the players, the Thompson submachine gun, has returned to the game!
Concert Marshmello
In 2019, the creators of Fortnite decided to experiment: right in the game, they staged a performance by American DJ and music producer Christopher Comstock, better known as Marshmello. The musician is one of the best DJs in the world, and for his online performance, a whole platform was built with a stage, a dance floor and a set of equipment.
Showtime’s performance was only half virtual. Marshmello did indeed play the entire concert behind the scenes, and all his actions were broadcast through the motion capture suit into the game. And the first attempt turned out to be incredibly successful: during the Marshmello sets, more than 10 million players were in the game, and several million more followed the broadcast. Epic Games even had to introduce new rules for viewers: they were divided into different servers and forbidden to use weapons, but they introduced a number of thematic tests.
The unusual performance was the first sign: Korean pop group BTS, DJ and producer Kaskade, Japanese singer and musician Kenshi Yonezu, singer Jay Balvin and many others performed next.
“Decisive Battle”
Not the most important from the point of the plot, but undoubtedly one of the most spectacular – the battle of a huge cyclops with a giant robot. A devourer emerging from the lake fired a laser and demolished buildings with one wave of his hand. The colorful ‘Mech had a hard time until he took advantage of the setting: an orb of power from the Vault and a sword found at the New Towers helped to finish off the monster and perform a victory dance – well, how it happened.
The remains of the Devourer remained on the island, and over time, a strange grove grew around them. But the main consequence of the battle was the appearance of the Zero Point: over time, it will become the starting point of the “End” event.
Astronomical: Travis Scott Concert
In a series of virtual performances by popular musicians, one thing stood out: the concert of rapper Travis Scott Astronomical turned out to be a sensation and broke popularity records. In the game, only the first show was watched by more than 12 million people, and several million more preferred the broadcast. A total of five Scott shows, and in total, they were watched by almost 46 million players.
In addition to attendance records, the concert also broke box-office records. The rapper received a total of $ 20 million for his acting performance – not a single live event brought him so much.
However, the performance is really worth watching. An entire island was allocated for the show, and during the concert, Scott’s giant avatar changed himself and the world around him, then flooding everything with fire, then submerging it under water, then turning the circulatory system into neon garlands. And the musician spent the premiere of the new song, sitting astride the whole planet. All of this would be unattainable in a live concert.
Galactus – Eater of Worlds
The battle turned out glorious: the players were entrusted with the control of countless clones of buses equipped with lasers, Iron Man, Thor and Wolverine fought on their side, Groot, Storm and She-Hulk appeared closer to the finale, and after the decisive explosion, the game universe temporarily closed – until the beginning of the next season , “Epicenter“.
The end
Nowadays, players are no longer surprised by the fact that the Fortnite universe sometimes closes for a “reset”. But the first such closure took place without any announcements or explanations – and really shocked many players.
It all started when traditional rocket launches led to the discovery of wormholes. Other rockets began to hit them, and it all ended with the appearance of a giant rift, into which, like a black hole, the entire universe was sucked. moreover, it had an effect even on those who were in the lobby at that time.
For a couple of days, Fortnite fans saw only this black hole everywhere.
The Destruction of Galactus has become the last major Fortnite event so far. To start the new season, the developers chose the option with the solo mission “Epicenter: Final Crisis”: in it, the Epicenter is sealed, but this event destroys all advanced technologies. Players return to prehistoric weapons and natural powers, and Fortnite moves into an entirely different era.
But we have no doubt: the developers are already preparing a lot of surprises for the “primitive” Fortnite. We are still waiting for the solution to the mystery of the mysterious Tower and no less mysterious eggs, from which soon … dinosaurs will hatch?
