Why the unloved Sigma versions of Ninja Gaiden 1-2 ended up in the Master Collection – Team Ninja explained

Ninja Gaiden will be back this summer with a reissue Ninja Gaiden: Master Collection… The collection will include the final part of the trilogy Ninja Gaiden 3: Razor’s Edge, and Sigma-versions of the first two parts.

In the fan community, Sigma releases are considered by many to be the worst versions, especially the second part, which has been heavily overhauled compared to the regular Ninja Gaiden 2 and, in fact, has become a different game. So why then Team Ninja decided to add them to the collection, and not the classic Ninja Gaiden 2 and the beloved and legendary Ninja Gaiden Black, which in itself is an improved re-release of the original game from the first Xbox?

Talking to Famistu game director and producer Fumihiko Yasuda explained that Sigma editions were chosen not only because they are the final versions of the two games, but also because the data from the original Ninja gaiden black and Ninja gaiden 2 were not subject to restoration… The developer did not go into details, but the studio seems to have lost the source code of the games, which would have required more work to remaster them compared to porting versions of Sigma.

Ninja Gaiden Master Collection will be released on June 10th on PlayStation 5, Xbox One Series X / S, PlayStation 4, Xbox One Switch and PC. Declared support for 4K and 60 FPS
